After what felt like an eternity of dread, the trailer for the long-awaited Super Mario film, simply titled The Super Mario Bros Movie, premiered today in a special Nintendo Direct.

After Shigeru Miyamoto, Illumination Studio head Chris Meledandri and stars Chris Pratt and Jack Black did a brief song-and-dance about how excited they were for the project, they got to the main event — the trailer itself.

The trailer starts out promising, as Bowser's Koopa gang executes a comedic takeover of a Penguin kingdom. Black seems to be having a blast as Bowser, and it's not particularly jarring to hear a human voice come out of the Koopa King.

What is undoubtedly more jarring is hearing Chris Pratt's voice come out of Mario — and that's not Pratt's voice pitched to sound like what we expect from Mario. It is simply Chris Pratt's normal speaking voice with a vague New York accent.

The trailer seems like it will be taking a "fish-out-of-water" approach with the Mario character, as we see Mario plop unceremoniously in the Mushroom Kingdom and go through the requisite "whoas" and "what the-s?" before stumbling upon Toad.

It's hardly as offensive as some of the internet's more callous predicted, nor as obviously terrible as the first Sonic the Hedgehog trailer. However, while some aspects of the trailer looked promising, it appears the film's biggest hurdle is going to be getting audiences used to Chris Pratt voicing Mario like a regular human person after 40 years of Charles Martinet voicing Mario like an Italian caricature.

What's the internet's verdict? Suffice it to say, pretty split so far from what we can gather.

The Super Mario Bros Movie is set to come out on April 7th, 2023. May God help us all through the takes to come online in the coming days.
