I remember when Gamergate hit and all these people were totally outraged that "journalists" who worked for sites whose entire revenue stream came from companies whose products they reviewed, were biased! who would have thunk it? 100% ad supported news is always biased. It can't help but be, because you the viewer are the product being sold, not the news People weren't surprised, they just decided to start doing something about it after there appeared to be a coordinated smear campaign against their own audience. There'd been a climate growing for years, such as the Kane & Lynch debacle or Doritos pope. I mean Nintendo Power was a beloved magazine and it was just Nintendo supplied marketing everyone knew that, but was a kind of line between selling something and outright demeaning your audience. People in gaming were well aware of that overlap between "journalism" and marketing, since after all it's an entertainment medium. You get the same thing in music or movie journalism as well But you also had more to the context. You also had the long-running and seemingly unending smear campaign by mainstream media against gaming, since it's origins. And you had the resurgence of politically correct ideologies, fueled by social media, that had already created controversies among other communities, notably atheism and comics What happened with Gamergate is that the gaming journalism outlets, or at least several notable ones, outright turned on their demos, all seemingly in the name of political ideologies, and it was just the last straw. To make matters worse, the mainstream media just ran with that as well, where now gamers weren't just the violence obsessed social outcasts, but misogynistic racists as well. It may have appeared to pop up relatively overnight, but the climate had been ripe for a while Generally people are aware of what "gaming journalism" is about. Just look at the hype for new games and such where people voluntarily as part of a hobby will seek out any and all new information about a game. I mean they're just getting hyped over a product for months, and largely helping companies market their products by talking about them. People know that, and you see it in other tech areas and entertainment as well Where it crossed a line was when that media started bashing and insulting their audience.
