From what I've read, there's actually supposed to be 9 ranks of angels. The typical winged people that are most commonly associated with 'angel', are Angels and Arcangels, and they're actually the two lowest on the scale of power. The higher you go up the ranks, the closer to God they are, and the more fantastic their appearances become.
I can identify a couple ones in this post, the eyed rings one is called an Orphanim, and it's the 3rd highest ranking kind of angel; they are basically the wheels that spin the entire universe. The fifth one down with the heads of a lion, bull, eagle, and man is a Cherubim, the 2nd highest rank of angel. (Completely unlike the cherubs associated with Valentine's Day, those are actually based off of the Greek god Eros.) The one in the 3rd pic with the 6 wings and flames is a Seraphim, and it's the highest ranking angel of all. It covers itself in its wings because it burns so brilliantly and brightly that humans cannot look upon its true form without becoming blind.
Yo, forget being Lovecraftian, this shit is biblical!
Anyway I learned just how weird angels can get from Bayonetta. I like it, gives them that beyond human feel, even the ones closest to the classic winged human design.
