Except Sanders doesn't call for government run grocery stores. His policies are more in line with that of President Franklin D. Roosevelt. That's the president that brought us out of the depression, beat the shit out of the nazis and saw the creation of many important pieces of legislation that for a while kept reckless bankers and stockbrokers in check.
Things such as tuition free college, which more or less happened back in '45 and led to the largest middle class growth in US history. Or raising the minimum wage to a living wage, because it is meant to be a wage that a person can live a life of dignity on. Not a wage that people can just scrape by on.
