An ashtray is a plate, dish, bowl, etc… that smokers dump their cigarette ashes and butts in. This is the classic example:

They can be decorative, some people would invest in really fancy ones, or buy novelty ones from the dollar store. Ash trays were basically funko pops for boomers.

And they used to be fucking everywhere. You'd have 2-3 per room indoors, one on a coffee table, one on a side table, on the kitchen counter, etc… In public there were dedicated ash trays or butt dispensers that would vastly outnumber public trash cans.

Then smoking became a faux pas and now you don't see them anymore, at all. Smokers huddle around trashcans outdoors passing around lighters like homeless people.

Would have been funnier if it was a seat cushion.
