Oh yeah I remember MandaloreGaming brought up in his Dead Space review that while he loves the game and the dismemberment mechanic, he did find it a bit grating that the game contains at least three separate instances of the same tutorial message at the start (the blood message, an audio log, and an NPC also telling you). I feel like a major reason why Visceral really needed to beat it into the players heads is because horror media throughout the years always had the same rule of "headshots are the most effective way to deal with humanoid monsters" but in Dead Space you can cut off a necromorph's head and it'll keep attacking.
I agree on both sides. It is really heavy handed, but I think it is necessary. After all, is it harder to unlearn a habit (headshots) than it is to learn a new one (cut the limbs).
