Cable is dead, and Rez must set his sights on the entire internet if he wishes to rebuild his media empire. • Gex may not understand new media, but Junior is devastated by Rez's takeover. For the first time in his life, Gex must fight to free the New Media dimension not as a fanatic... but as a father. If Gex wants to win his son's favor, he needs to put a stop to Rez's plan. However, being out of his depth when it comes to internet culture, he knows he can't do this alone... Gex's Disaffected Zoomer Niece Born around the turn of the century, she is young enough to share Gex Jr's cultural references and old enough to occasionally figure out what the hell her uncle is talking about. Her parents, after seeing what TV addiction did to Gex, severely limited her television hours growing up. Because of this she relished any time she was able to spend over at Uncle Gex's place, since he let her watch whatever she wanted. While they don't exactly have a close emotional bond, she is fond of her uncle... even though she thinks he is "kind of cringe." Gex enlists her help to save the New Media dimension and, by extension, his relationship with his son. Serves as Gex's personal guide to the internet. Enjoys 80's/90's throwback media, despite not really getting the references (Gex is happy to explain them to her) Does impressions (like her uncle) but is REALLY bad at them (unlike her uncle). GEX: ENTER THE GECKO CHOICES ELECTRON EGM SILVER ATHANG PIMP STRUTTIN' Publisher: Crystal Dynamics Developer: Crystal Dynamics Featured In: EGM #99 The first half-dozen times Crystal Dynamics brought this game out to show us, I thought, "Hmm...it's just a so-so Mario 64 hopeful. No big deal." My mind quickly changed when I actually played the game. Enter the Gecko is a lot of fun! Ninety percent of that is due to the excellent level design. Each of the themed worlds carries a distinct and funny personality of its own, making you want to keep playing to see what the next stage has to offer. The creativity and thought put into this vast game is mighty impressive. Other good points: The control is right on par, the graphics are simple and clean, and the highly touted camera angles work...for the most part (I still haven't found a 3-D game whose camera worked perfectly). Gex's trademark humor also helps this game stand out. The numerous new wise-cracks will draw a chuck- le or two (and they never seem to get on your nerves, despite the occasional repeat). I only wish Gex could scale any wall, instead of just the designated surfaces. I understand how that could be a problem game design-wise, but how cool would a 3-D gecko game be if you could climb anywhere you wanted? Be that as it may, Enter the Gecko gives you lots to do, lots to explore and lots to look at. Give it a shot. I think it's the best 3-D mascot/plat- form game on the PlayStation so far. Dan VISUALS 8 HDS TO ADDITS Gex's gorgeous graphics really exemplify just how far the PS has come since its release. Loads of beautiful textures, seamless anima- tion, great lighting effects-the game is just a joy to look at. But that's just the outside. On the inside lies a great 3-D platformer with tons of replay value and truly hilarious game- play. This game has loads of personality. My one gripe is that the camera can get annoying at times, but it's not unbearable. John A AGES A fan of the first Gex, I was hoping the sequel would be 2-D. But after playing this polygonal rendition, I'm not disappointed at all since this is about as good as PS 3-D platformers get. There's a lot to do in Gex, partly due to the huge, diverse (and great- looking) levels. The one fault with the mis- sion-based gameplay is that it lends to some unnecessary backtracking through lev- els. Still, this is a great PS platformer. Kraig SOUND 8 Gex is as good as Mario 64 clones get on the PlayStation. It packs more than enough levels, all of which are unique. I like the mis- sion structure of each level, since it keeps you exploring. Still, the game's not perfect. Despite the effort Crystal Dynamics put into the camera system, awkward camera angles are abundant, often making it hard to judge your jumps. You can usually adjust the cam- era to a workable angle, though. crystal dynamics 3do GEX MEDIA GAME 20.03. OF THE MONTH category: Action EDITORS CHOICE challenge: Moderate FOCUM KOLEGGINES OR STA release date: Now back-up: Battery It is simply the best 3DO action title there is. GEX does so much within the limits of the system that at times it seems like Crystal Dynamics tried too hard. The only flaw is in the slowdown that fre- quently appears. The control is perfect, and the graphics are great. Best of all is the witty voice- overs that will totally have you in stitches. All of the levels have lots of secrets, and they are all huge. The themes are great, and I'm hoping a sequel is on the way. If there was ever a game surrounded by endless hype and development time, GEX has to be it. But the long wait was well worth it. GEX proves to be one of the best action games ever seen on the 3DO! The graphics and sounds are superb, and the voice of comedian Dana Gould adds some great one-liner humor to an already enjoyable game. Unfortunately, the backgrounds scroll a bit choppily but that's not the fault of the program- mers and hardly takes away from the fun. Well, it took a while, but I finally found a 3DO action game I REALLY like. GEX is to 3DO what DKC is to Super NES. Crystal Dynamics has taken a proven success formula and implement- ed it into a game that's sure to make its mark on the 3DO platform. Players will surely welcome the game's fresh look and style. The animation is impressively fluid, the music is top-notch and the challenge is perfect. This is, without question, the best action platform game for the 3DO! This is going to be the game that draws people to the 3DO. Not since Mario and Sonic has there been a cute and cool mascot character. The game plays great, looks great, sounds great and simply is great. There is some slowdown, but I really overlooked it due to the large levels and great game play. The smart-mouth comments are a new plus from a character who makes its own statement. This is definitely must buy for the 3DO and perhaps the best game yet! Best Feature: Graphics, voices Worst Feature: Choppy scrolling Time To Complete: Long Also Try: Any other side-scroller
