I have a hunch that the concept artist actually touched a cactus and drew this with the barbs still inside their hands out of spite.

(If you are ever tempted to: Do not. Cacti barbs have barbs that have barbs, so even pulling the main barb will still leave a bunch of prickly shrapnel in the wound and is a bitch to clean and heal)
