Give Me Your Hat is a line associated with a thread-derailing shitpost on 4chan, where the Soldier from Team Fortress 2 answers to a seduction attempt by a Pokémon trainer by asking that she gives him her hat. This has become a running gag on the website, with the Soldier accumulating hats from various characters.

Origin

In November 29th, 2011, an anonymous user on 4chan posted a NSFW fanart of Pokémon trainer Dawn in a seductive upskirt position, and roleplayed as her seducing an opponent after she lost a battle.

Oh no, you beat me in a Pokemon battle!
But I don't have any money!

Perhaps there's something else you want, hmmmm……?

The first and most memorable answer to this post displays DC Comics character Larfleeze yelling "GIVE ME YOUR HAT" in response.^[1] Soon after, an edit of the screenshot was created, displaying the Soldier from Team Fortress 2, wearing the Tyrant's Helm, in the place of Larfleeze, as a reference to the passion of TF2 players for hat cosmetics (see also: Hat Fortress 2).

Spread

In the following years, this exchange has become a popular running gag on several 4chan boards, being repeated with various characters, mainly from the Pokémon franchise. Online artists have also drawn fan arts inspired by this setup. For example, on August 3rd, 2018, Tumblr user commandertilio^[2] posted artwork showing Soldier wearing numerous hats (shown below, left). On September 1st, 2020, Twitter user @TheF1amethr0wer^[3] posted artwork of the scene, gaining over 2,100 retweets and 12,000 likes (shown below, right).

The joke gained so much traction that it even led to the creation of its own specific subreddit, r/iwantthathat^[4], on March 10th, 2019. It also inspired a Steam Workshop item, the Ass Whooper.^[5]
