Clannad is probably the best anime I've ever seen due to its likeable characters and great story. If you don't cry at some of the later episodes then you probably have heart of ice. Funny, sad, happy and depressing this contains a bit of everything.

A more humor based anime, centers around a "F" Class of students who have the worst classroom and must fight other classes in order to get better classrooms. A bit of ecchi but it's still great though the characters aren't very deep.

I've seen my share of animu. These are some of my all time favorites:

Pre-1990:

Mazinger Z
Doraemon
Hokuto no Ken
Gegege no kitaro
Galaxy Express 999
Dragon Ball
Ashita no Joe

1990-2000:

Dragon Ball Z
YuYu Hakusho
Ranma 1/2
Card Captor Sakura
Magic Knight Ray Earth
Dai no Daibouken
FLCL
Excel Saga
Cowboy Bebop

Evangelion is a recommendation, but not one of my personal favorites. Too hyped.

2000-Onwards Now with pics!!

Azumanga Daioh!

Death Note

Gurren Lagann

Suzumiya Haruhi series

Kara no Kyoukai (not all episodes, but some are gems)

Evangelion 1.01, 2.0, etc (yes, it is a very nice improvement)

Puella Magi (F*CKING) Madoka Magica (<-THIS)

I'm always a bit surprised when I don't see The Big O anywhere on a suggested list (maybe because no one likes it.) It's Batman in a post-apocalyptic world with giant robots.

It's the only series I've bought after seeing several anime series in life.

I posted a lot of the anime I've watched in this thread, and most of them are fairly good (since I usually drop bad ones before I get close to completing them), but I won't bore you with such a list. -__-

I will, however, bore you with a list that is still very long :D

My personal, classic favorites:
Ghost in the Shell, Katanagatari, Kara no Kyoukai

Aria, Outlaw Star, Kaiba

Rurouni Kenshin, Monster, Akira

Cowboy Bebop, Baccano!, Gurren Lagann

Neon Genesis Evangelion (not a huge fan of the "rebuild" movies), Kare Kano, Serial Experiments Lain

Fullmetal Alchemist, Ouran High School Host Club, Mushishi
<img src="http://i.imgur.com/FLywv.jpg" height="140" /
Koi Kaze, Black Lagoon, Gunslinger Girl
<img src="http://i.imgur.com/0XrFb.jpg" height="140" /

Favorites right now:
Panty and Stocking, Madoka, Redline, Steins;Gate

Intently watching right now:
Mawaru Penguindrum

And damnit, there are so many more :'(

edit: (also, if you are curious about a somewhat popular anime, chances are I have seen it, and can give you a highly opinionated rundown of it).

I don't always watch anime, but when I do, its dubbed in English.

I watched ergo proxy, it pulls you in, but it really starts getting off plot, I did not even finish it, the game show was just totally out of place.

No recommendations on Boku no Pico? I am (not really) disappoint.

As for the actual recommendations. Go watch Serial Experiments Lain, if you haven't already. It's an awesome combination of an acid trip, and a total mindfuck. I love it. And with its 13 episodes, it's not too long either.

Great, now I feel like I live under a rock…

Actually this thread could be quite helpful.
I've never watched an anime in my life (aside from some Pokemon as a kid, and some of Miyazaki's movies, which I liked). But I like the anime art style, and I'm be willing to give one a shot.
So does anyone have a suggestion for a good "entry-level" anime?
Preferably something that's not over-the-top. I hate things with completely unrealistic feats or ridiculous attacks like what I've seen of DBZ or Gurren Laggen. My willing suspension of disbelief is easily broken by that sort of thing (in fact, it's easily broken in general).
I'd prefer something that's clever and funny, without being cheesy. I'm not looking for something with a big, epic storyline, just one that's relatable and easy to get into.
Oh, and snarky characters? Always a good thing.

@ Nintendork64: Sounds like slice-of-life is your genre. Unfortunately, not too many of those get dubbed, and I can't really think of any particularly good ones.
Cowboy Bebop is a pretty good starter (and it will help you stop living under a rock). Taking away everything I saw as a kid, .hack//sign pretty much got me into anime. Also, Monster is incredibly realistic and also an excellent series if you can stomach one person surviving after getting shot in the head because of a genius neurosurgeon.

That's a little bit hard, son. Animu is made so rather "unreal", "surreal", "superb-something", "sci-fi", etc. is presented. Almost always you'll have at least of something "over-the-top".

Else, they would do it as J-Dramas, and that is another huge world, almost as large as animu.

Even Cowboy Bebop has its fighting and space scenes that might be rather "over-the-top".

Then I would greatly recommend the ones made by Satoshi Kon, Tokyo Godfathers, Perfect Blue:, or Paprika (as mentioned above, the Inception before Inception).

Or, as mentioned by Silver Chariot, Memories.

I agree. It was interesting but just got more and more fucked up as the plot went along. I never finished it eitheir.

A lot of you have mentioned some of my favourite animes like Black Lagoon and One Piece, I'll mention something else (forget Hiroman's huge ass /a/ list :P )

Legend of the Galactic Heroes:

Think something like Victorian era colonialism and combat….,but in Space and in the far future.

The Galactic Empire and the Free Planets Alliance have been at war for decades due to their differing philosophies. The Empire is styled after 19th Century Prussia and the FPA are a republican democracy similar to the United States.

Within these two giant organizations rise two men who would change the face of history: Reinhard Von Lohengramm seeks to become the next Kaiser to free his concubine sister and end the corruption of the current dynasty. Yang Wen-Li simply entered the FPA Navy to pay for his college debts and become a historian, unfortunately for him, he's a genius at war and takes the mantle of protecting democracy from Reinhard's attempts to place the entire galaxy under his autocratic rule.

While these two giants face off, several shadow organization vie for power such as the planet-state (like a city state on a galactic scale) of Phezzan and the Terra Cult, a dogmatic religious organization that seeks to return all of humanity to Earth, whether they like it or not. (Earth is a backwater that was abandoned long ago)
