About

This image macro meme originates from an exchange during Peter Jackson’s 2001 film adaption of J.R.R. Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring.

Elrond: The ring cannot be destroyed, Gimli, son of Gloin, by any craft that we here possess. The ring was made in the fires of Mount Doom. Only there can it be unmade. The ring must be taken deep into Mordor and cast back into the fiery chasm from whence it came. One of you must do this.

Boromir: One does not simply walk into Mordor. It’s black gates are guarded by more than just orcs. There is evil there that does not sleep. The great eye is ever watchful. It is a barren wasteland, riddled with fire, ash, and dust. The very air you breathe is a poisonous fume. Not with ten thousand men could you do this. It is folly.

The line is at 7:12 of this clip. For those wondering it’s the first hour tenth minute of the movie.

Possible Origin of Meme

One of the first known instances of “one does not simply X into Mordor” used in an image macro occurred on Something Awful on January 16th, 2004.

Internet users started to illustrate that not only can you not simply walk into Mordor, you cannot drive, run, fly, boogieboard, or rock your way into Mordor either.

I don’t know about this. It’s just a LOTR quote. Nothing more.

Actually, there’s quite an extensive following to this meme. I’ll dump some images when I get home.

There are a ton of derivitives but there is absolutely no back-story. If we let this in, then we’ve got a ton of work to do with adding Star Wars, The Cake Is a Lie, and every movie and video game reference from mainstream culture.

I think we’ll have to wait and see how about this…

The first one I saw was an animated gif of the scene. I saw spin offs of that first and then it seemed to be simplified to single images rather than animated.

Not like my opinion matters, but I’d like to say that most of the pics here listed, while referencing the meme well, are just not funny. The only ones that are funny are the ones that have verbs which involve movment because then the phrase makes sense. I mean, come on! Jesus into Mordor? Photoshop into Mordor? Fucking SPOCK into Mordor? Ugh. Again, not criticizing the meme or entry, just saying because there has been no comment on this page for a while.

One does not simply walk into Mordor, Boromir says. But you don’t see Frodo flying, do you?
