What is Love is a song created by Haddaway in 1993.

The song reached #2 in the UK and Germany, but it reached #1 in thirteen other countries, all of them European or Asian. In the United States the song reached #11 on the Billboard Hot 100, and #12 in Australia. It was a very popular song…but that’s just the start of the fad.

In the 1990s popular TV program Saturday Night Live started doing their “Night At The Roxbury” sketches, which featured two guys who go to clubs to get girls and universally ending in disaster. Usually the SNL host would be a third person out clubbing. The sketches were notable for shots of the trio driving, bobbing their heads to What Is Love. A particular neck-crink style

In June 2005 a YTMND was published featuring an animated gif from the SNL clip, heads bobbing endlessly. It was a huge success and the variants poured forth. What is Love was paired with goth singers, Bill Cosby, the O RLY? owl, iPod commercials, video game characters, and so many others.

In February 15, 2007, user JoeandTom of Newgrounds submitted a flash movie called What is Love?. It used South Park-style anination and told a story of a man trying to get a girl to like him. JoeandTom won “Daily Feature” and “Weekly Users’ Choice,” and his animated stands today with a score of 4.34 with 46,455 votes and 574,969 views.

But the question remains… what is love?
