What is Love is a song created by Trinidanian singer Haddaway ^[1] in 1993. The song reached number one in 13 countries. The song experienced a revival as the song from the Saturday Night Live “Roxbury Guys” sketches. ^[2]

In 2005, a scene from The Roxbury Guys, where they are bobbing their heads in unison to the song “What is love”, was upload as a gif in YTMND, becoming an exploitable gif.

Origin

The original scene can be found in the sketch comedy programme Saturday Night Live ^[3], in a sketch called “Night At The Roxbury”, featuring Chris Kattan, Will Ferrell and Jim Carrey. In the sketch, the three characters are in a car, bobbing their heads in unison to the song “What is love”.

Spread

In June 2005 a YTMND called “What is love” ^[3] was published, featuring a gif of the car scene. A 8-bit version was submited a few days later. Since that, the gif becames a recurrent fad, creating a lot of gifs.
