The 4th of July is right around the corner, and as people get ready for their cookouts, they're searching for some good ol' American jokes from the best Independence Day memes.

Every year, there are a few memes that resurface in the zeitgeist. Most of them are ironically over-patriotic, portraying Americans as loud, brash and stupid. But, it's Americans who are laughing at the memes, taking ownership of the stereotypes and saying, "That's right."

So, what are the best Fourth of July memes? Here are a few to get your holiday started.

'Murica

The quintessential 4th of July meme is 'Murica, sometimes spelled "'Merica." To an outsider looking in, every American citizen drops the "A" when saying their country's namesake.

It started as a joke on an old internet forum called Democratic Underground. From there, users wrote it in Impact font across various image macros, ranging from Chuck Norris to the One-Up America Eagle.

Nothing truly says 4th of July patriotism quite like an unabashed Southern accent unapologetically saying its country's name wrong.

Oh, I'm Sorry, I Thought This Was America

South Park has a long history of America-oritented memes and jokes. One of the show's most famous is Randy Marsh's quote "Oh, I'm sorry, I thought this was America!"":https://knowyourmeme.com/memes/oh-im-sorry-i-thought-this-was-america

In the episode "The Losing Edge," Mr. Marsh is seen being ushered into a cop car, calling upon his fellow countrymen to abide by the call of freedom. Unfortunately for Randy, the reason he's getting arrested is not as glorious as his speech.

The scene has inspired countless memes over the years as people add top captions to the screencap. Like many American memes, the captions rely on Randy's unflappable patriotism despite being dead wrong.

Back Up Terry!

One of the most viral 4th of July videos is called "Back Up Terry!" It shows a man lighting fireworks but at the pivotal moment his motorized wheelchair malfunctions and he can't put it in reverse.

Terry survived the minor firework mishap, therefore becoming a wholesome yet hilarious classic, akin to many DIY firework shows where accidents almost happen every year.

Mug Blooded American

If you're too young to drink this 4th of July, maybe try a Mug Root Beer. Legend has it, if you have a "Mug Moment" on Independence Day, you'll transform into a Mug Blooded American.

Two years ago, a TikToker started posting ironic Mug Root Beer content in the visual language of your schizo uncle's Facebook posts. Of course, the saying's a play on "red-blooded American," referencing root beer because … why not?

It's nonsensical Zoomer Humor, but the mean-mugging bulldog logo adds a little rationale as to why it goes so hard.

My Pronouns Are USA

Conservative anti-pronoun jokes are almost always perceived as cringe by many online, and My Pronouns Are USA is not an exception.

This catchphrase flooded political speeches and rallies last year, resulting in a viral TikTok sound that added banjo music and bald eagles screeching. LGBTQ+ people and women then started using it seemingly more than anyone, flexing their Americana and queer identities as it became a meme.

What Is A Kilometer

One of the most well-known American 4th of July memes of the moment is What Is A Kilometer! If you're American, there's actually a semi-decent chance you don't know what a kilometer is — at least not how long of a distance it is.

Basically, this meme is aggressively patriotic by being blatantly ignorant about the metric system. America is one of the only countries in the world that doesn't use it. Instead, they have miles. It's what the Founding Fathers wanted.
