Where Does The "Right In Front Of My X" Template Come From?

In 2017, Tumblr discovered a clip from a ridiculous adult film in which a woman walks in on two men doin' it in the kitchen. Incredibly, she doesn't instantly figure out what's happening and engages in some conversation with the pair while chowing down on a salad. After an inordinate amount of time, she picks up on what's happening and declares, "Really?!? Right in front of my salad?!?!"

For a time, the image and the phrasal template "Right in front of my X?" were memes on social media, thanks to the woman's clear indignation on behalf of her salad. It faded out of public consciousness as most memes do, but had a respectable run in the limelight in 2017.

How Did "Right In Front Of My X" Return As A Meme?

In 2021, a nearly identical meme began rising in Southeast Asian internet communities. It started with an edit of a panel by webcomic artist Flork of Cows, perhaps best known for inspiring the Hey man, you see that guy over there? template. The panel basically repeats the "in front of my salad" punchline with a Flork character and a dish called Pancit Cancon.

While it's unclear why the meme surged again, it may have become big in the Philippines because of a pack of Flork of Cows stickers available to Telegram users.

The Flork variation breathed new life into the meme, and it's remained relevant ever since. The creator of Flork of Cows acknowledged the development of the meme in September of 2021, thanking the Filipino community for helping spread his character and the new meme.
