What's With All The Posts About An 'Ice War On Europa'? RPG-Style Memes About A Space War Raging On Jupiter's Icy Moon Explained

Between Helldivers 2 and the increasing popularity of Warhammer 40K, it's clear that we as a society are obsessed with miserable, endless space wars lately.
That's why when X user @lolt64 began Ice War on Europa-posting, thousands of other internet users decided to join in and roleplay as miserable soldiers fighting an endless, pointless war on Jupiter's icy moon.

It started small with some jokes about trench warfare and cold-blooded nanites being exchanged between friends. But by mid-April 2025, it had snowballed into a whole role-playing universe.
So put on your snow boots and load up your raygun because we are about to dive into a brief history of the war-stricken frigid plains of the Ice Planet Europa and its hashtag "#WarForever."
What Is Europa, and Who Started Posting About A Forever War Raging On Its Ice?
Europa is one of Jupiter's moons, best known for being a frozen wasteland hiding a vast ocean, and, possibly, alien life underneath its ice.
But in January 2025, Twitter / X user @lolt64 imagined something bleaker: An endless, miserable war waging across its icy plains. He first tweeted about "the frozen wastes of Europa," on January 9th and went on to expand the setting through a series of vivid but absurd tweets.

@lolt64 tweeted brooding soldier dispatches from the moon's endless conflict, capturing the world through vignettes highlighting the warfare and chaos.
One post displays the sonic landscape of Europa (gunfire, rockets, avalanches and pained groans), while another highlights what passes for humor among the soldiers — the mere idea of warmth.

How Did Memes and Posts About The Ice War on Europa Spread?
While @lolt64 and his friends continued to exchange tweets and posts role-playing as soldiers on Europa, thousands more did not join in until he posted a fictional "pre-war global chat" log showing soldiers talking smack mid-firefight. It introduced key slang like "warmie" (an insult for anyone who still hoped to feel warm), and aliens like howler spiders.

By April 18th, 2025, Europa Ice War-posting had gone mainstream. X user @tarnationface posted a photo of Europa's striated surface and joked about a "trench network visible from space," racking up 15,000 likes in just a few days.
Meanwhile, X user @laserboat999 dropped a meme that same day about bleeding out under the giant looming face of Jupiter, accumulating over 316,000 views in the same timeframe.

Bart Simpson even got drafted into the war when X user @SpaceBasedFox posted a viral meme depicting him as an Ice War veteran. By April 19th, even NASA's official X account had joined in the fun by tweeting with "Science Forever," parodying the now-viral "War Forever" slogan.

How Did @lolt64 React to His Creation Going Viral?
On April 20th, @lolt64 addressed the viral explosion of his science-fiction creation, clarifying some points. First, he asserted that the Ice War on Europa isn't a Backrooms or SCP Foundation style collective myth. Instead, it's intended as an RPG zine project with a specific, bleakly absurd vibe that is more Wolfenstein inner monologue than badass military epic.
Second, the point of War Forever is that it's pointless, with endless suffering, endless fighting and zero heroism. So if you think it sounds cool to join the ice trenches, you might have missed the point.

Still, @lolt64 said that they are grateful for the many people participating in and fleshing out the world he began and that he has no intentions of playing hall monitor to people's fun.
