Why Are People So Mad About the 'Realistic Pokémon Team' Trend on TikTok? Rants About People Enlisting Legendary Pokémon on Their Teams Explained

The "Realistic Pokémon Team" trend, typically set to the gentle piano of the Lake Verity Pokemon Diamond and Pearl soundtrack, features people assembling Pokémon lineups based on their jobs, personalities and travel history.

But the trend recently mutated from part roleplay and part personality quiz into something more heated after some people began stuffing their teams with legendary and mythical Pokémon instead of more grounded picks like Ratatas.

Naturally, that’s gone over rather poorly with the nerd patrol on the app. Here's a recap of the "Realistic Pokémon Team" trend and the firestorm it's set off in the fandom.

What Is the Realistic Pokémon Trend on TikTok?

The "Realistic Pokémon Team" trend has users curating a Pokémon lineup based on their real-life environment, job and interests, with an emphasis on "realistic." You might pick a starter native to your home region, a Pokémon from a city you visited once, and maybe a third evolution you "earned" through work (say, a Machoke if you work construction or a Beldum if you study astrophysics).

So, when someone drops a Mewtwo or Rayquaza in their "down-to-earth" team, Pokémon TikTok's collective hivemind started seeing red.

The trend began picking up traction in late May 2025, with TikToker @aero.mace's May 28th post garnering over 100,000 views in roughly a week. His team consisted of a soothing Meganium and a Cubchew inspired by his travels to Alaska, and set the template for what followed.

What Are Some More Examples of the Realistic Pokémon Trend?

One standout example came from TikToker @daymattaaah on June 6th, 2025. A construction worker by trade, he selected a Growlithe for his dog and showed how he worked alongside hardier picks like Lairon and Kabutops during his construction job. The post earned over 200,000 plays and 10,000 likes in three days.

Other TikTokers chose a different path. On June 5th, TikToker @kzk_stash7 posted a slideshow that included Zekrom, Lucario, and Corviknight. That's one legendary, one Pokémon for aura farming and one pseudolegendary flying taxi service.

The video pulled in 200,000 plays and 25,000 likes in a few days, but it also kicked off a wave of exasperated TikToks.

What Was the Backlash Against the Realistic Pokémon Team Trend?

Several TikTokers reacted to the glut of Pokémon fans severely overestimating their "realistic" ability to catch and train some of the more storied Pokémon.

For instance, on June 7th, 2025, TikToker @taco.junk criticized people stuffing their teams with rare and overpowered Pokémon. "Buddy, you had an emo phase, that doesn’t mean you have the skill to catch a Rayquaza," they joked, hitting 400,000 views and 59,000 likes in just a couple of days.

The day before, on June 6th, TikToker @notwildlin posted a sketch posing as someone looking for a roommate in the Pokémon world, only to be confronted by would-be tenants whose "realistic" teams featured monsters like Garchomp, as if Chad from South Carolina suburb could naturally befriend a literal apex predator with scythe arms and a land speed stat of 102.
