E-girls are not a new phenomenon on the internet. From Boxxy to Belle Delphine, the internet has a long history of both men and women going gaga over online-famous girls with a cutesy, loli-adjacent vibe. Thanks in part to the rise Twitch streams and Patreon, fans can have near-constant--and monetizable--access to their idols, driving the e-girl phenomenon to the forefront of internet culture. It seemed to peak last year when Belle Delphine infamously sold her bathwater to "thirsty gamers," but it turns out that was but a taste (no pun intended) of the power an E-girl can have on a populace.

Enter Neekolul.

Last week, the Twitch streamer, YouTuber, and TikTok user Neekolul, real name Nicole, posted a video of her dancing to "Oki Doki Boomer" by Senzawa while wearing a Bernie Sanders T-shirt. The confluence of TikTok cringe, dead meme, and vaguely political messaging made it an instant viral success.

However, it wasn't until Sunday when she posted a pair of selfies that pretty much literally brought Twitter to its knees.

These selfies proved too much for Twitter to bear, and a quick scroll through the replies will reveal heretofore unparalleled levels of simping. A "Simp," as my colleague Don put it, is like a "beta orbiter," different from a Reply Guy because while a Reply Guy can often give unwanted attention, a Simp will simply worship the lady they're replying to and, rather than expect anything in return, would simply be happy with the slightest hint of acknowledgment. Observe:

While many of the replies are hilarious (and at least somewhat self-aware), there's also stuff like this, which… hoo boy.

Others seemed to believe that Neekolul was sent by some higher power to test them.

Users soon discovered that Neekolul has a boyfriend, which brought about a mini-collective meltdown and a brief suspension of her account.

For her part, Neekolul seems to enjoy the newfound attention. On a recent Twitch stream, she said that women "deserve to be worshipped" and that Simping is "King Shit." Simp safely, everyone.
