Oki Doki Boomer

About

Oki Doki Boomer is a song by YouTuber Senzawa that contains lyrics referencing the slang expression OK Boomer. In March 2020, the song was used in a viral TikTok created by user neekolul, in which she mouths the lyrics while dancing in a Bernie Sanders shirt.

Origin

On November 14th, 2019 Twitter user @sensenzawa^[1] tweeted, "okidoki boomie uwu ╰(´︶`)╯♡" (shown below). The tweet, which was posted a month before the song was created, garnered over 5,000 likes in four months.

On December 14th, YouTuber Senzawa uploaded a video titled "Oki Doki Boomer", which featured a clip of an anime girl dancing and a beat by YouTuber Jammy Beatz^[2] while a high pitched voice can be heard singing "OK Boomer, whatever you say, Boomer" in the background (shown below). The video accumulated over 1.8 million views in three months.

Spread

On January 25th, 2020, TikToker @urfairyfae used the song in a video that received over 61,600 likes in a month. The song was typical used in TikTok videos in which users defend their fashion sense to older people. In February, both @sophie.helton and @keepitpeachyyyy used a sound clip of the song in their videos which gained over 77,500 likes and 61,800 likes respectively in a few weeks (shown below, right).

Neekolul Bernie Video

On March 2nd, 2020, TikToker @neekolul^[3] uploaded a video in which she dances to the song with a Bernie 2020 t-shirt on and reposted it to Twitter that same day (shown below). The tweet was captioned "Okie BOOMER KEKW #Bernie2020 🇺🇸✨" The video accumulated upwards of 2.63 million views, 25,100 likes and 2,300 retweets on Twitter in three days.

The next day, Twitter user @KokopelliAZ^[4] replied to @neekolul's tweet by saying, "Further, Millennials and Gen-Z are using the term "Boomer" to replace what they really wanna call me. Nigger. 'OK boomer' is the response given by someone who has nothing constructive to contribute to the dialogue" (shown below). The tweet garnered 1,900 likes and 450 retweets in two days.

On March 3rd and 4th, two reposts of @neekolul's video were made to /pol/ on 4chan^[5][6] with on post captioned, "BOOMERS F--KING DESTROYED BERNIE 2020" (shown below).

Parodies

On March 8th, 2020, TikTok user Jordan Magley posted a video himself lip-syncing the song while wearing a Bernie Sanders shirt (shown below).

On March 9th, Twitter user @creature_maria uploaded a video of herself singing a parody of the song with the lyrics "OK Liberal" substituted for "OK Boomer," in which she wears a T-shirt with the name Marx printed on the front (shown below). Within 48 hours, the video gained over 4.5 million views, 20,400 likes and 2,700 retweets.
