We’ve been waiting for a trailer for the new Super Mario Bros. Movie for a while. Well, really, we’ve been waiting for any details about the movie whatsoever to come out. The only thing we do know extensively is the cast, which is full of huge stars and probably took up the vast majority of the movie’s budget.

The internet has been deeply interested in how this film would turn out, especially with Chris Pratt as Mario — and now that there’s a trailer, we’ve got some more information (and it’s already led to lots of debate online). It’s even led to fan-made trailers like the one below, which look much more fun than the actual movie.

There’s a lot to unpack in the new Mario trailer. Bowser rides in on the Death Star and spends more than half the trailer making a dramatic entrance. We don’t know why Mario looks around blindly like he’s never seen anything from the Mario world ever before, as if he were a real Italian plumber who was suddenly transformed into a 3D rendering of himself (is this what they’re planning on doing?).

Overall, the reactions are mixed, but plenty of people aren’t feeling too good about what they’ve seen in this trailer — namely Chris Pratt's Mario Voice.

It has its merits, unlike some other films that are aimed at a Gen-Z audience, like The Emoji Movie, which was actually a lot worse than it looked … if that’s even possible.

The animation in the Mario movie looks pretty fine-tuned and interesting. It looks like there’s a plot to it, and they didn’t give away all of it in the trailer, which lots of children’s movies are guilty of. And so far, there aren’t too many complaints about Jack Black’s performance as Bowser.

Chris Pratt is getting a lot of hate for his voice acting. Maybe it’s more hatred towards the actor himself, who’s been under a lot of public scrutiny in recent years. It seems like people were expecting something completely mindblowing and bizarre about his voice acting, and they’re disappointed by how ordinary it sounds.

Some people think his voice sounds exactly like Pratt himself, but before we have more clips, it’s hard to tell if this is really the case. At the moment, he just sounds like a voice actor without much of an accent. And this is another controversial point of what we’ve seen from the film so far since Mario is known for his Italian accent.

@watchmojo Didn’t even change his voice at all what a power move 🤌 #supermario #chrispratt #nycc #fyp ♬ original sound – watchmojo (Taylor’s version)

At the same time, it seems like the internet is maybe joining in a little too eagerly on hating on Chris Pratt’s voice acting because we’ve literally only heard two lines from him so far.

And to be honest, there’s no way Pratt could voice Mario with that thick Italian accent, because no matter how he did it, it would come off as racist and weird to some. Kind of the Italian equivalent of when you go to the Mexican restaurant and your mom says “Gracias” to the waitress, but this time you have to sit through two hours of it on the big screen.

@tristanskywalker2111 I swear y’all expect this movie to look like a wii cutscene 🤦‍♂️ #mario #newmario #mariomovie #mariovoice #chrispratt ♬ Can You Feel My Heart – Bring Me The Horizon

But honestly, we should be appreciative of what we have here because it could always be worse. Seriously. Now is a good time to point out that this is not the first adaptation of the Super Mario Bros franchise.

There was another, a live-action version of the Mario story all the way back in 1993. And judging by the theatrical release poster, it couldn’t have been a good movie at all.
