as one of the few people on here that doesn't use adblock, i have to say that the ads on here are awful. I simply mute my computer any time i go onto this site because of the auto-playing ads and now with the weird thing on the youtube videos it just keeps getting worse. i've been on this site for a long time (this isn't my first account, i keep forgetting what account i had set up and so this is like my third) and it seems that ads have just been getting more and more annoying and intrusive (like the short period of time where they were in the images)
i understand why ads are necessary but this site really needs better ads

If KYM needs money so bad as to have a intrusive pop up for every gorram page you load, maybe open up a Patron or something for the site instead.
In other words
Dear KYM,
-Me
Please just get better ads, the ones right now are autoplaying and auto sound
I have to mute or just block ads atm, and I don't even wanna use the mobile site without ads just because I know. Staff please don't do this too us.

There are a lot of issues you didn't mention that are pretty obvious, but in case they aren't I'll bring them up a few here.
"And we get it. you’ve come here to browse memes, not ads."
I have no problem with ads in general. I do have a problem with ads that are auto-play videos with the volume on max or ads that infect my computer with malware.
"In order for us to improve your browsing experience on this site, we kindly ask you to whitelist us from your ad blocker."
Kindly ask? You mean that pop-up that now opens on every single page.
"With more people who whitelist our site from ad blocker, the less ads we have to stack around your memes."
It's a little shady to indirectly imply the ones at fault for all this is people who don't whitelist the site.
If this popup is permanent and not just temporary for awareness, than I guess farewell.
sure i'll do it, gotta support one of my favorite sites somehow. i'm going to be super bothered if i walk right into some malware though, so fingers crossed that won't happen
hint hint
If you anti-adblocker is going to be this annoying on every page, I will just stop coming here altogether.

Followed your tip and got this.
It makes it a little better.
Select and filter the grey background as well. And anything else that you feel is annoying.
Who the actual fuck thought that this was a good idea in the slightest? Do you really think that an intrusive ad would help when the whole purpose of adblock is to avoid intrusive ads?! If anything, that just enforces my paranoia and keeps it on, and will probably force me to abandon this site altogether if the ad really gets annoying.
Remove this damn thing, it doesn't solve any of the problems here. The problem lies in your malware ridden, intrusive ads.
I'm definitely taking a break from this site, this and the whole air.tv thing after a youtube video aren't asking for ad revenue support, it's blatantly trying to annoy your userbase. Get better ads or fuck off
Thanks to ArchaicEX for creating this solution. You just need Stylish for this to work.
body { overflow: auto !important; }
.jquery-modal.blocker { display: none; }
Until Google Adsense and the other ad groups actually start curating and checking ad's for content that is either malware or disruptive, the blocker stays up.
You can force ad's down our throats, but all we're gonna do is regurgitate it back up and show you the shit within!
Greetings from 4chan, someone asked me to check the site.
First stop using adblock and shit like that, and install uBlock Origin, not no ublock, uBlock origin, they are different.
Install it, open it, click the gear icons to go to options.
Then go to my filters.
Copy/paste this:
https://pastebin.com/U7LvmKsf
Pastebin because i cant copy/paste it here because the formatting breaks and some characters are not allowed in this forum.
There, no more problems, if the site is broken or something tell me.
Update: Fixed white square popup.

Still get a pop-up, it's just small and blank now

We've complained about this sort of thing loads already, but it really does bear repeating. The KYM userbase would be more friendly to changes to the ad system (changes, in this case, nearly always being more intrusive, overt, or generally disgusting than they were previously) if changes to ads weren't the only part of the site being updated. We saw it with the Olympic meme self-advertising amid a steaming pile of features that both the users and mods wanted. We saw it again with the addition of the Complex bar; despite the fact that only two notable non-ad changes were made in the same period, namely the anti-spambot filter and the changes to the voting timer. These additions, while certainly necessary, are less "feature" and more "emergency fix". This would be a lot smoother for everything if there were some kind of compromise that wasn't just "here's another update where we only change advertising policy."

Blocking element does nothing, it comes back after a reaload and where do I add that line? Adding it to the end did nothing as well.

Let's kill that Complex shit at the bottom & Air.TV as well

I am totally willing to disable adblocks on my favorite websites. But to put something in perspective for you, KYM, I disable my adblocker on the porn websites I frequent. I trust my porn websites to provide a safer cleaner ad experience than some meme website. If I can trust porn websites and cannot trust your website when it comes to advertisements then you should be ashamed. Fix your ads and I'll be totally happy to disable my adblocker.

In uBlock Origin "My Filters" section.
It wont work in other Adblockers as far as im aware.

I don't know why the admins thought having it display on every single page was a good idea. I don't think they thought this one through. Or maybe they did and just didn't care what the userbase wanted.

Works like a charm, good job lad!
Alright, I'm having an awful day and this popup idiocy has made it worse. Everyone, here's a solution, if you are on Chrome and have uBlock Origin. I imagine there are similar options on other browsers with ad-on options, or if you have a basic understanding of writing scripts.
I'll provide screenshots. When you go on kym you're met with this:
Right click and hit Block Element:
Click Create after highlighting the area you want blocked, in this case the popup:
Afterwards, the cell should disappear, but there's still the fade and the scrollbar issue:
Click anywhere the fade is, brilliantly for us it's the entire page. Click Create again:
Now the fade is gone, but the scrollbar is still missing because that's the wonders of popups:
Go into the ublock settings and add this line:
||https://knowyourmeme.com$inline-script
Click Apply Changes and it should work.
If that's too complicated, just copy and paste this into the "My Filters" block under options for uBlock Origin.

Remember, there are always methods to bypass website limitations. If you don't like a site "feature", you can always use an add-on to block it. That's what I did with half of the "dank memes" and worthless karma system.
Forgive me for my attitude, but I'm just sick of the continuous bullshit I see here, both from administration and certain user-base areas. Sometimes the mods clean things up and handle things properly, sometimes not or they simply don't have the power to do anything.
To the people that make these site decisions, listen to the goddamn feedback and don't be stubborn. If a new implementation is met with negativity, remove it and fix it. Don't half-ass this, or else you'll only lose support with each passing day and each awful decision.
This site really isn't what it used to be. Maybe it's because half of my friends are gone, but maybe it's also because of the ridiculous complex banner or forum drama or mismanaged ads shoved down your throat like this popup. No better way to alienate the userbase than to add more limitations and convoluted ideas to the site. God bless uBlock, I couldn't bear this site without it.
Goddamn I'm off to make a hot cup of tea in this sweltering heat to cool myself down from this stupid nonsense.
edit: looks like other users are finding solutions. But I'll keep this up because pictures are nice.
edit 2: If you have issues with what I've presented, I'm sorry, but I'm not in the mood to take more time out of my tea-drinking to help. Other uses have presented solutions, check with those, or experiment with uBlock and diagnose individual lines. Like my computer science teacher reminded us every class, go through each line, disable it, and see if the rest of the code is working. Or go on r/uBlockOrigin if you still have issues. That's all I can say, I've blocked a lot of elements on this site so there may be some things I haven't noticed. Good luck.
EDIT 3: One more thing that may help fix conflicts. Temporary disable the uBlock lines that cause the issues like hiding nsfw or delete buttons. Then using the Block Element tool, highlight whatever was missing and take a good look at the code uBlock has provided. If any of those lines conflict with the lines TestingAnon or I have provided, then maybe try to whitelist the conflicted lines, if that makes any sense. No guarantee this will work, but I'm just throwing ideas out there and I don't want to experiment with issues I'm not facing, sorry.

"Forums on mobile have redirecting ads still."
That's because all mobile phones (except replicant OS ones) are botnet.
That or either your adblocking addon is very bad.
That or your browser is letting ads not being filtered.
Use a fork of firefox like "abrowser"or "icecat" and install µblock origin.
Clarification, if I don't have my adblocker on it redirects. That was the message I was trying to get across, I either get the popup, avoiding the redirects, or I get the redirects, avoiding the popup. No way around it.
Someone is downvote-bombing anyone who is against the whitelisting.
I guess not wanting harmful malware is offensive to some people. :/
This site has the worst ads I've ever seen on any site that wasn't a remarkably shady porn site; this pop-up is a far superior alternative to them. As someone else said, just make a Patreon or something; don't irritate 3/4 of the userbase. I doubt that 1/10 of them are going to turn their adblock off.
@Xin
Thank you, that fix worked perfectly.
Edit: Actually, not completely, as disabling the inline script removes other functions from the site.

The script i posted earlier doesn't mess with the site functions (https://pastebin.com/U7LvmKsf, https://files.catbox.moe/aqbxvc.png)
Well looks like my job here is done, back to work in booru filters.
Both Xin and TestingAnon's Ublock origin solutions work perfectly, but for me there's something wrong.
When I put the code inside the My Filters tab, the NSFW and Delete buttons on comments go away. Any clue on how to disable the popup yet keep those buttons?
Oh, and comment sections for meme entries don't seem to be loading either.
So…
Two years ago, a post that had a -39 score was logged as the most downvoted forum post on KYM. I do not remember seeing a more downvoted forum post, until now.
If this isn't now the most downvoted forum post, it's in the top 5 for sure. Maybe that'll help put things in perspective, how much the userbase dislikes it.
Sometimes I feel like this site is just trying to steer us away from it. Timed votes, air.tv, malicious ads, and now this.

Pretty sure the only two upvotes there are the only people who liked the idea and are right where it could be pushed.
Really, I don't understand why this was carried out. This just looked like a terrible idea from the word go, and in action it's worse.
At least we know it can never get worse than this!

Worked for me, solved the problem fully.
The problem is, "meme research" literally means browsing 4chan, so the only thing the site actually needs money for is hosting, which plenty of other sites can do perfectly well without intrusive advertisements.
And honestly, KYM is only good because of its community. The actual articles are often inaccurate (if I want actual info, I'll go to ED), the memes are unfunny (literally a guy getting hit in the face went trending), the pages load slowly, and the voting system is cancer.
So basically, what I'm trying to say is the ads are unnecessary and there are many (possibly better) alternatives to this site.
Ok so I NEVER post. I've always been a fan of lurk more, but THIS made me need to post.
This is exactly the stuff that makes me keep my adblocker turned on. As other users have said the ads on this site are horrible, to the point I can't even use the site on my phone without everything freezing. And now instead of offering non intrusive ads you force this obnoxious popup box on the users everytime they open a new page?
I've already used the work arounds users have found and it's a good thing to. If there wasn't a work around I would have jumped ship and never looked back. I don't care where I get my cheap lulz from. Reddit does a good enough (abit more cancerous) job at it. It's not like Kym is the only meme site on the internet.
Now I want to see this site continue for years to come, but if this is how you're gonna go about trying to "prolong" and "help" it, then I give it a year or 2 at most.
I CAN'T LOAD KYM WHITHOUT FIREFOX, CHROME, OR OPERA CRASHING BECAUSE OF YOUR ADS! I came here to laugh and jape! not get pissed off by my computer!

Were the admins were forced to do this by the people who own the site, or was it their decision.
If we use ad nauseam, would the site still get money?

Spaghetto wrote:
Also, a curiosity I noticed: whitelisting KnowYourMeme, either by pressing the "power" button or typing it directly, doesn't disable the pop-up for me with uBlock Origin, but does allow ads.
Anyone else notice this with their adblockers?
Maybe you have other countermeasures that block those up, such as a populated host file, a good antivirus (ESET will have none of your shit) and/or a firewall/proxy server down somewhere in your interpipe. (the kind that does caching, grants/deny access and blocks shit, not the "seven proxies" one)
I do have a varying amount of those both at home and work. Seems that my home computer and network isn't a bad dude enough to trigger the pop-up once I disable the browser optimizer. Yet. Might try this later at work, their measures will trip most anti-adblocking scripts even without extensions.
The reason why I don't browse KYM on my phone is because of the virus-infused ads that constantly get in the way, so I opt to use my computer because I can actually have adblock. And now this Whitelist Us message thing is encouraging me not to protect myself from intrusive ads, in addition to being intrusive in and of itself. I get that the website needs to make money with ad revenue, but come the fuck on. If you're going to be giving us ads, don't give us virus-infested ones. I dunno who is in charge in regards to the ads and stuff like that, but they need a slap in the face. Even the mods are sick of this tripe. That says a lot.
