Due to the historical speed of the turns (hundreds of years at a time), it is necessary to give a response to your diplomat's questions before the next turn occurs.

Should you surrender to the Persians and incorporate your armies into theirs, they will be extremely lenient. The worst thing that will happen to you is taxes and levied troops. Your current rulers will be named the Satraps of your province.

Should you resist and fail to defeat them, they will massacre your ruling elite, replacing them with either Persians or notable locals. Your slave population is likely to be emancipated as well. Persia views itself as a protector of conquered peoples, and will try to liberate the oppressed in your nation. Your government will change to a Satrapy.

In both situations you will continue to play the game, just as a province rather than an independent nation. It is very possible that the Persian Empire will fall apart without Alexander the Great (who does not exist in this timeline) but that may have much to do with who surrenders and what success the Persian armies have in the future.

I would like you to know also that Persia, at this time in history, controlled nearly half of the entire planet's population. The size of their armies are unfathomable; Herodotus claims that the army of Xerxes at Thermopylae consisted of two and a half million soldiers, although it is much more likely that it was only a few hundred thousand men. This is still titanic compared to the Greek forces, which numbered no more than ten or twenty thousand. Anybody who does not have significant terrain advantages and an age-old elite land force is going to have a very bad time fighting Persia.

Seeing as war is inevitable and my people have no qualms with most of it, I'll lend any amount of ships or weapons to those who have become victims of aggressors, disregarding the Kolkar, Minoa, and Persian of course.

I would just like to add that anyone considering fighting against Persia is taking an enormous risk. To be blunt, the chances of you defeating Persia are minuscule and should they defeat you, you will loose much more than just a little sovereignty.

In the end it is your own decision but I have to strongly advise against aggressive action against the Persians.

First off that transformer problem of mines is fixed and as for the Persians I'm starting to lean towards complying to them. But of course I'm going to see what is going to happen before I make my final decision.

Okay, here's my plan. We surrender to Persia. When they've established the government in our countries, we meet up somewhere and discuss about resisting the Persians and start an uprising. Is that good a plan? Probably not…

Also, my country needs armor and weapons in exchange for the finest warships we have.

An uprising would be worse than a war because of a couple reasons, the main one being that the Persians would already have a military and political presence in our countries.

Besides, you’re not in any real danger yet until me and BSoD decide to submit or get destroyed.

Soviet Marmalade wrote:

Anyone have any ideas on how to deal with the Slavic? I totally forgot about them… Which is bad…

Well you'd better figure it out soon. I bet a turn will be posted in the next couple hours.

The next turn will be 26 hours from now, in case some of you are still making major decisions and need to send edits due to recent revelations. Also, I am getting better, although yesterday was hell, and I expect to be healthy again tomorrow. Regular daily turns will continue then.

also im suspended lololol

Hmm…I guess I may have been overzealous in my willingness to help and not realizing what danger was at hand. I retract my statement to help those under fire from the Persians. Anyone else is still able to regularly trade or receive aid. The Persians are a massive thread I do not wish to anger.

Soviet Marmalade wrote:

Maybe get some ground troops and line them up at the border. Might help.

All this waiting is making me reconsider complying with the Persians. I need an answer from BSoD real soon.

There are a lot of mountains in the Levant and Anatolia that could come in handy, but it’s best that I don’t try my chances.

And Tillster, considering that even doing so much as bordering them might incur their wrath, trying to isolate yourself isn't going to save you. Of course considering that winning a war against the Persians is a pipe dream, I don't see why I should be stating this.

TURN 4

Religion

  • The Persian Empire expands significantly to both the east and west. European nations quickly fall, with most surrendering and adding their armies to the Persian alliance. India has mostly fallen to Persian conquerors, and the thousand nations descend upon Italy and Libya.
  • An outbreak of civil war occurs in Kolkar. The peasantry, supporting the Spruceborn king, threatened an uprising against the dread lords who ruled the land with iron fists. In retaliation, they allied together and formed the Dread Horde, invading every land in which Spruceborn followers can be found. They also attempted to take advantage of the situation in Lok-Lod, but failed miserably, losing a great many troops attempting to storm the sea-walls of the capital.

You may only write up to seven lines of orders from now on. This turn was very hectic to write and took too long. Some of you (nearly half!) write a whole wall of text each turn and they just keep getting bigger with each turn. I understand that you are possibly getting very excited and involved in the game, and that is great, but this will negatively impact the quality of the turn as I try to condense your actions into smaller paragraphs and spend more time on you than other players. The seven line restriction may be further restricted or even expanded in the future, depending upon how things go.

If you feel that your people's cultural specifics cannot be sufficiently expressed through seven lines, feel free to write about them in the thread. It may not end up in the turn but hey, at least it gets out there and is added to the life of the thread, right?

Mr. Stalker
Lok-Lod

Government: Tribal Kratocracy
Culture: The Fights, Talion Law, Lord of the Arena, Death Matches, Blood God
Economy: Maritime Mercantile
Military: Large Navy, Elite Longbowmen, Blood-Berserks

  • The fleet is sent to blockade Ireland. Unfortunately, this comes just as Kolkari and Ovon fleets arrive to invade Lok-Lod. What defensive force remained behind is destroyed.
  • The Kolkari invade again, but this time succeed in breaking through the fleet and reach the walls of the capital. They are destroyed entirely, and another wave of invaders from ovo arrive shortly after. They outmaneuver the navy that remains at the capital and bring down the walls with days of successive barrages from ship-mounted catapults and balistae.
  • "Blood for the blood god!" The people chant and sway daily to show their reverence to this crown jewel of the Lok-Lod pantheon, who is now revered above all others.
  • Wales is invaded and a few battles are won, but Lodite armies are quickly surrounded as many nations invade from all different directions. Regardless of whether they win any battles, they lose the war.
  • A class of suicidal berserk warriors known as the blood-letters is formed for the purpose of striking fear into the hearts of their enemies.

Levantine Republic
Stalemate

Government: Republican Satrapy
Culture:
Economy: Agrarian
Military:

  • An attempt is made to evacuate the government and the elites of society to Cyprus, but the greater population is forced to remain in the Levant. Persia invades and installs a new governor. Levant is now a province of Persia.
  • The Cyprus colony fails, and the poorly-equipped settlers move to hide in the mountains and avoid the Persian-affiliated Syserrene settlers who move in shortly after they did, but in greater numbers.
  • In light of the Persian hegemony, a new constitution is written for a new government. An elected prime minister is given control over economic affairs while a selected (typically hereditary) president manages the military.
  • An attempt is made to adopt the Kebab faith, but there is enormous backlash due to recent religious developments in the nation. A man known as Jesus of Nazareth was forced out of his home in Israel due to radical preaching outside of the typical doctrine of the local monotheistic faith, Judaism. He moved into Syria where he gained a massive following during his forty-eight years of preaching there. Now there are two Jewish sects and, among the upper class, Kebabists. The three groups are quarreling over what the true path should be.

Dathuastan
Soviet Marmalade

Government: Despotic Satrapy
Culture: Floating Homes, Ship Builders, Tide God
Economy: Maritime Mercantile
Military: Large Fleet, Conscription, Corsvaires Order

  • The Slaves are allowed to settle in Dathuastani lands and are given all the rights of a tribe in the nation. Many Slavic tribes take up the offer readily. As a result of this sudden influx of population, a massive swath of land is colonized to the north. Many other Slaves, however, continue migrating south.
  • A diplomat is sent to Persia to surrender. Surprised at the very existence of Dathuastan's northernmost lands, the Persians accept, and add Dathuastan to the empire as a province.
  • A knightly order known as the Corsvaires is established. Essentially the heavy cavalry of the sea, these men are expert sailors crewing the fastest and best-armed ships on the Black Sea, if not any sea. They are readily levied into the Persian armada.
  • A man named Demian rescued two noblemen who foolishly fell overboard while at sea during a sudden storm. Returning to the capital, and requiring a suitable puppet to replace their decadent present king, Demian is declared the lord of Dathuastan. Unfortunately for the nobles, he is too difficult to control, and becomes the first in a strong and fierce dynasty of strong-minded kings.

Doon
Laud Piestrings

Government: Tribal Confederacy
Culture: Talion Law, Tedizm, Tundra Living, Ice Structures, Gender Equality
Economy: Agrarian
Military: Specialist Weapons, Eits Spy Network

  • Settlers continue migrating north. Superstitious fear of the east prevents sailors from settling on any Finnish coasts. A fleet is prepared specifically for the conquest of this imagined dangerous eastern land.
  • A covert group of traders, fishermen, travelers, bards, and other such mobile people are put together for service in the Eits, an undercover spy operation. Not much is known of the Eits besides their use of trained birds (particularly ravens and pigeons) to send messages back and forth.

Polis
Sergeant Arch Dornan

Government: Tribal Republic
Culture: Solairism, Turtle Status
Economy: Coastal Agrarian
Military: Massive Small-Boat Fleet, Sun Warrior Fanatics

  • Fanatical sun worshipers are given special place in the army, equipped with heavy armor featuring designs that praise the sun and make them very striking on the battlefield.
  • Turtles become popular pets. So popular, in fact, that their price skyrockets and they become elitist status symbols.
  • Grapes for wine? Nah. Who needs alcohol when these sweet treats can be served up raw at dinner? The middling classes and elites of society have gained a preference for eating their grapes, rather than drinking them.

Vakun
You Are Reading This

Government: Tribal Despotism
Culture: Megalith Temples, Tengriism Faith
Economy: Palace
Military: Legions, Coast Guard Quadremes

  • War is declared upon Kolkar. Shortly after, civil war breaks out in that nation and the conflict quickly spills out over the border as an elite, highly mobile force known as the Dread Horde begins a murderous rampage throughout the countryside of Gallia.
  • Colonists continue expanding borders eastward.
  • Heavy, coastal defense ships are designed specifically to clog up harbors with superior arms in the event of a siege from the sea.

Mac Tíre-Madra
Spider-Byte

Government: Tribal Confederation
Culture: Sacred Dogs
Economy:
Military: Warrior Society

  • Soldiers in Scotland and Wales cross the border into Lok-Lod, sweeping across the countryside south towards the capital. A naval offensive attempts to land in the capital, but is sunk by the Lok-Lod galley force moving to blockade Ireland. Altogether, Lok-Lod has fallen completely and is now occupied by foreigners.

Ovo
Twisty

Government: Tribal Republic
Culture: God Questing
Economy: Maritime Mercantile
Military: Large Longboat Navy, Austere Elites, Siege Ships

  • The border with Vakun is fortified.
  • Siege ships with catapults and balistae mounted atop them are added to the fleet.
  • Kolkar is invaded, but a new faction arises out of a civil war in their lands and quickly overruns the Ovo frontier. The Dread Horde is highly mobile, and cannot hold onto any lands for long, preferring to burn whatever they get close to and quickly move out before anybody can retaliate.
  • Lok-Lod is invaded and the capital is successfully taken thanks to the new siege ships, which easily dismantled the coastal battlements in a matter of days and allowed Ovon soldiers to storm the city.
  • Longboats sail out into the great north sea and discover Greenland. They establish a logging and fishing camp there that develops into a colony.

Monarchy of Roses
Tchefuncte Bonaparte

Government: Tribal Despotism
Culture: Warrior Poets, Gender Equality
Economy:
Military: Merchant Marine

  • 1 turn missed.

Zellania
Naschzaube Maus

Government: Elected Dictatorship
Culture: Tide God, Bakuki Theater, Hostage Nobles
Economy: City-State Maritime Mercantile
Military: Specialist Fleet
Flashpoints: Slavic Settlers

  • Thousands of unfortunate souls are drafted into settlement groups and sent east. Few are ever heard from again. Slavic migrants have moved into the region, killing or abducting what colonists moved into their path. While they have not yet crossed the border, it seems inevitable that they will.
  • Peace is made with Minoa shortly before they became a Satrapy of Persia. Their armies join with the Persians and make landfall in Greece, quickly marching up the coast taking town after town. The Persians demand that Zellania surrender and become a part of the empire.
  • Another set of Persian armies land in Italy, marching south to Polis and north into Riveria. The Zellanian navy is crushed by a coalition of Syserrene, Minoan, Egyptian, Persian, Dathuasani, and Levantine fleets.
  • The firstborn sons of each wealthy family is required to spend his childhood in the capital where they spend their early lives learning to love and obey the king. This act puts too much strain on the independence of these families and they become more settled into the fact that Zellania is a nation rather than a union of tribes.
  • The fleet is diversified, with more ship types and advanced tactics to keep them working cohesively. Ramming ships, ballista ships, fire ships, and others now keep the fleet as terrifying as ever. Unfortunately, the ships were not built fast enough to replace those that were destroyed by the Persians, and they are thus far succeeding in keeping their supply lines open.

Naval Monte
CrowTheMagician

Government: Constitutional Republic
Culture: Totemic Rites, Gender Equality, Infinity Faith
Economy: Coastal Agrarian
Military: Large Galley Fleet, Meritocracy, Elite Horse Archers, Shadow Men

  • A new faith arises out of a fusion of philosophical fields of study. Karmic beliefs and a cyclical nature of all things are the primary tenants of the religion, giving much flexibility for the inclusion of various pantheons of gods. The religion, which exalts the mythic "Wheel of Infinity," quickly spreads throughout north Africa.
  • A frightening rumor about a dark corps of shadow soldiers is spreading throughout the land. It is said that these dark ghosts aid the republic in destroying her enemies in secret, both at home and abroad. Those who previously spoke out against the government have silenced themselves out of fear, allowing the more mainstream political groups to gain a greater foothold in government.
  • A constitution is written and signed, enacting the creation of the Millennium Court, to handle judicial concerns, and the legislature known as the National Diet. Together these two bodies, led dually by a president and prime minister, now govern the nation.
  • All roads in Africa are said to lead to Carmina Gadelica, the capital of Naval Monte. This new road system, with frequent enough supplied rest stations between towns, greatly enhances land trade along the desert coast.
  • The most expansive library known to man is in Naval Monte, and its size only grows greater as its reputation spreads and more books are added to its collection from far and abroad.
  • A Persian diplomat arrives demanding that Naval Monte bow to his king. Their armies have already entered Navan lands and besieged a major city.

Kingdom of Riveria
Crimeariver

Government: Tribal Despotism
Culture: Dendrolatry, Spruceborn Faith
Economy: Agrarian, Mercantile
Military: Mob Army, Fortified Alps, Civic Duty Archers

  • A Spruceborn king visits Gallia and convinced the locals to join the kingdom. The Kolkari are less enthusiastic about following him, even if they believe him to be divine. However, some soon realize that their current rulers are literally insane, causing a civil war. The Sprucen support joining Kolkar with Riveria while the Dread Horde and their followers instead support the more conservative option of going to war with everybody within a day's ride. As a result, Gallia erupts into conflict, with the Dread Horde remaining undefeated and storming from town to town, razing farmsteads and murdering populations.
  • In order to further fortify themselves in their mountainous fort of a nation, the Riverian war chiefs declare that it is now the born duty of all Riverians to teach their children archery, or at the least allow them to learn from those who can teach it. Stone towers are also built in the center of most villages and along the sides of strategic mountain passes. Some of the larger towers become so elaborate that they could be considered castles.
  • Greentide, in the middle of an economic boom, is sacked by the Dread Horde. This deals a massive blow to the Riverian tax potential, sapping the kingdom's treasury significantly.
  • Persian invaders arrive south of Threepeaks and begin moving towards the capital, but are finding it difficult to identify any way to scale the defensive mountains chained together by walls and forts. Their camp is becoming restless, gaining numbers rapidly, and may launch a massive assault very soon.

Kebab and it's Kebabists just made me chuckle uncontrollably. The chuckle turned into a laugh pretty much.

Damnit. I didn't mean the guy to be a dictatorial lord. Fek. I wanted my country to be a monarchy. Politics is hard.

No writeup on Syserror?

Well I can see from the image that the Cyprus expansion went well. Sorry about that Stalemate. Furthermore, I am now Persia's bitch. But still that' according to plan. Nothing I can do but wait Persia out now I guess. Not sure where I stand politically or economically

>NPC made out of Dathustan rejects spawns out of nowhere and cockblocks my northern expansion

Kekkety kek. Now I don't know how the rest of my plans went but I'm positive that I've pissed Syndic off at some point

Thr-
THREE FUCKERS?!
First, we have the DOG Humpers
Second, we have Corpse Fuckers
And Third, we have… Honestly the only honorable one.

No I am, I really am fine with this… More blood for god. The thing is those Dog Humpers got more land out of it. For them I say, get ready for the revolt. Oh and that so called "warrior" society, where is it? I mean my people had arenas, Blood wanting, WARRIOR LORDS, yet I don't have this "warrior" society, cause what you have is not a "warrior" society, it's a pathetic society.

Now the Corpse Humpers is the one that mystifies me, they attacked me while they had a civil war, Hilarious.

And Ovo, honestly if Ovo asked me to fight for them I would have.

But I EYE something

Something lovely.

i dont really ally with someone whos first reaction to not getting something he wants are loud threats

we simply agreed you were too unstable.

@Tillster & BSOD

Somehow you guys got cut off and I only copied down to Riveria. Oops. I did say that turn was hectic to write, didn't I? Anyway, here is your stuff:

States of the Rising Sword
TillsterRulz

Government: Tribal Confederation
Culture: Honor, Meritocratic Mystery Cults, Meritocracy
Economy: Agrarian, Mining Towns
Military: Quinqueremes, Berserks, Bonfire Watchtowers

  • Watchtowers, outfitted with massive bonfires to warn of incoming armies, are constructed atop many mountains throughout the realm.
  • Citizens who prove their worth to society are now allowed into the mystery cults, placating those who were angered by exclusion. However, the number of people entering the temples is still small, and other religions are starting to become popular among the masses.
  • The meritocratic methods of the temples spread throughout society. Most family relations are ignored with actual ability being considered highly when considering an individual for a position of responsibility. An education system is put into place, focusing on yearly exams to prove the worth of individuals brave and intelligent enough to take them.
  • Northward colonists are initially wary of the utterly barbaric Kolkari, but as they are distracted with war the settlers gradually warm up to the idea of moving further north and accelerate their migration all the way to the border. Soon after, however, Kolkar erupts into a civil war which engulfs the entire region. The sword settlers are embroiled in the conflict as the Dread Horde swarms across their lands, pillaging all they can get their hands on.

Syserror
Butterscotch (of Death)

Government: Elected Dual Dictatorship Satrapy
Culture: Kebab Faith
Economy: Maritime Mercantile
Military: Military Schooling
Flashpoints: Slavic Settlers

  • The consuls bow to the Persian king and are declared official Satraps of the Persian Empire. Syserror is now a province of glorious Persia.
  • Cyrpus is conquered. A group of Levantine settlers is said to be hiding in the mountains there, but they are never actually seen.
  • Academies are established for the training of various elite troop types, including cavalry and hoplites. Persian armies moving west at more leisurely pacing tend to stop for a few months or a year at a time at such academies to help train soldiers or recieve training themselves.
  • Colonists spread northward, but are subsumed into the Slavic hordes as they move into the Balkans. Slavic raiders rarely attack Syserrene settlements, but have prevented the colonization of the north and occasionally settle (illegally) in Syserrene borderlands.
  • The consuls are coerced into signing a constitution binding them to seek reelection every four years, effectively binding their careers to what actions they take in office. This results in greater accountability and, thus, fairer society. The economy balances out as the consuls gradually relinquish property and businesses back to the public to appease them.
  • An alliance is suggested to the Persians with Minoa. Taking the consuls on their advice a diplomat is sent but he receives no success. Persian armies quickly advance on Minoan Anatolia and, after seizing most of Minoa's empire from them, they concede and join the empire. The seized land is given into Syserrene governorship, as the Persians believe Syserror to be more cooperative and loyal.

on a different setting

persia is fucking scaring me, they already broke trough most of europe and are pretty much gonna engulf us

and i got the dread horde on my left ALSO trying to engulf me.

shit i dont think i can hold off both

Last edited May 19, 2015 at 03:15PM EDT

Boy the Persians are quick in their conquest, I was expecting to last at least one more turn so that way I can send in a diplomat to join them more peacefully but at last I didn't do that. Oh well at least everything else went somewhat according to plan (the shadow people men could be a problem down the line but for now let's see where things go with).

Might as well be the first to write down some cultural aspect of my nation down in the thread. The Shadow Men (who despite the name does allow women in) are based on both the Arabic Hashshashin or Assassin order and the Japanese ninjas. So all the stuff that both groups do they do (though they don't have supernatural powers nor do they collect pieces of eden or take hash). While it's true that they will kill someone who is a threat inside Naval Monte the chances of them killing you for idealogical reasons or low since they are more focused on taking out would be assassins from taking out their leaders. Of course even with that truth that isn't going to stop people being afraid of them.

Last edited May 19, 2015 at 03:35PM EDT

Just a heads up for everyone in western Europe. I'm going to submit to the Persians and offer them passage through the mountains under the condition that they deal with the dread horde. If they decline this offer then it's very possible that they'll try to conquer Riveria by force, and they may eventually succeed but they're gonna have a hell of a bad time trying.

@ Soviet Marmalade

> monarchy
> rule by one
> dictator
> rule by one

I thought they were almost synonyms of each other.

@CrowTheMagician

Since everybody in the path of Persia either surrendered or simply did not respond to the attack, Persia was able to get much further than they did historically. Furthermore, as Macedon was colonized by Zellania and the rest of Greece was ravaged by war, neither Alexander the Great and the Greek city-states were able to come into existence. The former died as a poor farmer and the latter simply never grew large enough to have professional armies or a military culture unique from Zellania or Minoa.

If everybody keeps surrendering to Persia, only the Huns will be able to bring them down, and that is likely only in Europe. The rest of you would have to wait until the Mongols showed up to gain your freedom.

You Are Reading This wrote:

Due to their rapid conquests, I can safely say Persia is likely to die by attrition rather than force.

They also aren't going to gain much from holding me either since I don't have a standing army. I'll be able to provide them with assistance whenever they're fighting inside my borders but other than that they only thing they'll get from me is taxes.

Mismanagement and corrupt politicians may also be a problem, and rapid expansion would cause many problems to surface from over-extension. If they grow too rapidly, they could decline in efficiency, which would be a good time to orchestrate disasters in Persia do bring the empire to its knees.

@You are reading this:

Considering that in Persia's history there were several civil wars fought for who would be the king them falling apart from the inside is very likely. Also the problems that you mentioned about rapid expansion is the reason why I stopped mines, I want to live long enough to either reach the end or close to it.

On that note sorry for advance if my army get's used against you guys.

So about them Persians. Anyone who doesn't want to be under their rule anymore (which I imagine is pretty much everyone) should resist them or start an uprising or whatever this turn. I can't go into details but just know that there is a plan, and the more people who fight against Persia the better.

You know depending on which king is ruling Persia infighting within the empire will be coming in shortly. I said before that Persia has had civil wars and true some of them were nations that were satrapies but the worst civil wars were the ones fought for being kings cause some of the kings in Persia never named their succors (Cyrus and Xerxes comes to mind).

Also I have to say that I made a mistake with Persia. I said that they had the whole eye for an eye thing, for some reason in that moment I was thinking of Hammurabi for a short moment when I was typing about the Persians and that sunk through and I didn't realize the mistake until hindsight. Well it goes to show that no every source is a hundred percent correct and that everyone can make mistakes even when they feel confident at a certain subject.

But other than that one mess up the rest that I have been saying about Persia are true.

Considering that we're in an era where we have barely passable sailing technology, I would like to see you try. I'm even amazed by the fact that Ovo somehow managed to make it all the way to Greenland in what would have basically been a pimped out row-boat.

Well the Vikings were able to reach the Americas in long boats so it wouldn't be too surprising for Ovo to reach Greenland.

Travelling between Iceland, Greenland was exactly how the Vikings managed to get into Canada.

Persia is basically expanding by taking hostages, forming and army of those hostages and then using that army of hostages to take more hostages which is then uses to reinforce its hostages.

Eventually there will be a point when all the hostages realize they outnumber the kidnapper. Persia has to fall apart at some point.

Until I see such a weakness though, I'm not sure what I can do about my situation. You guys by all means resist but with my forces in their control; I'll have to think of something cleverer.

Now about these Slavs. Their advance was intimidating, but they're no organised military. They're a bunch of settlers that just displace other settlers. I don't think they're prepared to deal with a real invasion force.

Nobody removes my Kebabs and gets away with it…
