TURN 11

  • The Yuan dynasty is overthrown, ending Mongol rule in China.
  • The Pawnee have been conquered by Shoshone, who use new cavalry forces to quickly storm across the plains.
  • Thanks to fast modern ship designs, such as the clipper, the whole of the world's coasts have been mapped.

Economy: Agrarian
Military: Longboats, Elite Longbowmen, Blood-Berserks, Zealot Warriors, Hoplites, Katia Landers, Bunker Cats, Thieving Cats
Tech: Cannon

  • The longboats take off from Britain with their stolen goods and knowledge. Defenders chase them up to the shore, attacking relentlessly. Once the Katians make it out to sea they are chased down and destroyed by ships from various nations. Almost every boat is sunk, and no Katians in numbers significant enough to rebuild an empire have survived.

  • Religious missions no longer receive funding, appeasing the people.
  • Mindanao and portions of Australia are colonized. The East Indies colony is expanded as well, and a fort is built in Madagascar.
  • The Madagascar fort is ravaged by an outbreak of disease and then ransacked by natives. The soldiers that remain are forced to retreat from the island.
  • Rifles are invented, allowing for greater accuracy and reloading speed due to a rifled barrel and bullets which come in cartridges.

Soviet Marmalade

Government: Republican Monarchy
Culture: Floating Homes, Ship Builders, Tide God, Persian Heritage, Compulsory Education, Eagle Reverence
Economy: Maritime Mercantile

  • Explosive shells are invented for firing through rifled cannons.
  • The northern Philippines are colonized.
  • Windmills are built throughout Dathuastan to help farmers mill their grain.
  • A fort is constructed in the center of the Cambodian capital.
  • War is declared on the Golden Horde. The vastly superior weaponry of Dathuastan completely levels the horde's armies.

  • Muskets are improved upon. A rifled barrel and bullet cartriges make firearms more accurate and faster to shoot and reload.
  • The Golden Horde is invaded and easily defeated. Their outdated horse-archer tactics are no match for modern weapons.
  • The isle of Timor and a great portion of Australia are claimed for Doon.
  • Panama is invaded and fortified. Many soldiers die of Yellow Fever while establishing a base camp in the area. Fortunately, the Mexicans seem unwilling to attack, pausing on the border.
  • The Choctaw are attacked in Cuba. Immediate retribution is dished out by the Americans at Manhattan through a massive invasion. Although the island of Manhattan itself cannot be penetrated by American forces, the rest of the territory of Doon is captured and the colonies razed.
  • The Iroquois refuse the gifts presented to them, instead allying with the Choctaw due to Doon's "predictable European aggression."

  • Sun Warriors are sent to invade the entirety of North America. They are not given a specific target, and end up landing in Choctaw. The Choctaw swarm the landing party and burn the boats which anchored nearby, forcing Polic forces to retreat and return home. This entire escapade has had the unfortunate effect of giving the Choctaw plenty of muskets and cannons to experiment with, and rumor has it that they have succeeded in replicating some of their own.
  • Trade is established with the far east through the Suez canal.
  • A group of elite dragoons known as the Sun Riders is formed.
  • The circus becomes a popular distraction.
  • Tourists are encouraged further to visit Polis whenever they go on vacation.
  • The printing press is invented, allowing news and propaganda to spread to all corners of the nation fairly quickly.

  • The armies return to Britain and destroy what Katian forces remained on the island. Diversionary tactics are utilized to keep the Katians divided and weak during combat. Most have retreated into the sea on their longboats, where they are destroyed by Vakuni, Syserrene, and MacTire fleets.
  • Clipper ship designs are constructed. These ships are the fastest sailing vessels possible, moving across the seas and connecting far flung lands with ease. They are also excellent military vessels for their maneuverability and space for guns.
  • Syserror is made exempt from the Gibraltar toll.

  • Armed with quinine and muskets, colonists establish a fort in Africa. Being given no specific destination they wind up in Nigeria.
  • The Mexicans are offered the Cat Pope in exchange for half of their Central American empire, the former Katian lands. This is considered a hilariously bad idea by the Mexicans, and it is only due to their distraction by laughter that the diplomat who sent this deal was able to escape with his life.
  • The military is reformed to be based around gunpowder weapons. New tactics are developed for this purpose.
  • A secret police is established for the purpose of thwarting enemy agents, such as spies and saboteurs.
  • Nightly raids occur on Katian landing parties as they attempt their retreat into the sea.
  • A massive invasion force is sent to attack the Golden Horde, but Dathuastani forces are faster and by the time the soldiers land in Latvia the war is essentially over.

  • The Maldives are successfully conquered, becoming an overseas colony of Zellania.
  • Martial law is declared. Presidio's army is destroyed and the man is put in prison for his crimes. Slavia is satisfied and cordial relations continue.
  • Clipper ship designs are drawn up and the first of these fast new ships make their way onto the Mediterranean. The clipper is the fastest possible sailing ship, capable of connecting the world like never before and easily outmaneuvering inferior ships in battle.
  • The Sword States are invaded and the north side of the straits is taken.

  • A new field of study – that of medicine – is developed. New drugs are experimented with and various forms of treatment for age-old diseases are developed. Quinine, in particular, is found to be a potent treatment for malaria, allowing explorers and colonists to delve deep into Africa without as much worry as before over becoming infected with some tropical ailment.
  • The old schools of horse archery are reopened with muskets in mind. Militarists are studying dragoon tactics to determine the best ways to utilize cavalry on the modern battlefield.
  • South Africa expands along the coast, claiming more land for Naval Monte. Zulu attacks increase dramatically in frequency as colonists establish settlements deeper into their lands.
  • A fort is established on Madagascar.
  • Navan publishers continue to make book-writing and book-keeping a central part of Navan culture. The Great Library expands dramatically as Navan explorers bring volumes of new material home from foreign lands to be catalogued, published, and shelved. New books are written as well, and both the writing and reading of fiction becomes a popular pass-time.

Flashpoints: Baron's Revolt

  • The incredibly fast clipper ships is invented and it quickly becomes the primary ship class in use for all purposes on the high seas.
  • The feudal system is abolished. A constitution is drafted setting in place a council of representatives elected from among the people to advise the king, who still holds ultimate power in the realm.
  • The Barons of Riveria, appalled that the king would prefer the council of peasants over fellow nobility, have taken up arms against the king. While conflict has not yet broken out, it will very soon if the barons alliance is not counteracted or calmed into submission.
  • Every citizen is legally required to own and know how to operate a musket, bringing the age-old archery laws into the modern era.
  • Full string orchestras become the most popular form of delivering pleasing sounds to people's ears.
  • While the state run companies are maintained, many of the trading laws are relaxed, allowing competition which is said to drive innovation. Overall this experiment can be said to be a success as the economy is growing faster than before.

  • The capital is moved inland to a city which is a touch less destroyed.
  • A public apology is issued to all the banking institutions of Europe. The military advisors are blamed for the fraud and they are ousted from office. However, this proves to be too little, too late, as the money required to alleviate this crisis is significantly more than the amount that would have been required to prevent it.
  • To fix the economy bonds are issued, but there are few people wealthy enough to buy any. Military equipment is sold at ridiculously low prices as more and more soldiers ditch service and stockpiles of unused weapons grow. Taxes are raised, enraging the peasants. Tarriffs are lowered, allowing merchants to start buying products from abroad rather than at home, which puts what few businesses that remained in the states out of business. Altogether the economic plan has failed.
  • The printing press is invented, which puts a match to the dry kindling of revolution in the states. News more easily spreads from place to place and various pieces of propaganda are rapidly dispensed as the presses enable publishers to produce hundreds of times faster than ever before. Soon, the entire nation is almost of one mind. People from all over realize that the States are more or less doomed with their present leadership.
  • Using weapons abandoned or sold by the military to pay for the expenses of running the state, an army of peasants is formed and storms the newly built capital building, an extravagant palace for the king and his ministers. The building is ransacked, and revolutionaries decapitate the royal family. Their heads are put on display atop pikes on the lawn.
  • News of the beheadings at the capital quickly spread throughout the nation thanks to printing presses working day and night producing pamphlets detailing the event. Soon, political representatives in every province are being tried in sham courts organized by the crowds and executed in public.
  • The peasant army is joined by a vast number of deserters and mutineers. The meritocratic structure of the old army is adopted by the new, and many of the knowledgeable and skilled generals of the old army are reinstated in the new revolutionary army.
  • Defended by the revolutionary army, a new constitution is drafted by the peasants in the capital. New representatives are being elected in every province.
  • Under the chaotic circumstances of the revolution, the economy is very quickly sorting itself out. Foreign loans are dissolved as the people who took them out are all now dead and the government which promised to pay them back no longer exists. Mercantilism is dead, and free trade reigns.
  • With enemies at the gates, the people are clamoring for war, ready to prove their resolve and new-found patriotism in battle.

  • The Indians are sent diplomatic gifts. Relations with the Holy Persian Empire improves.
  • The Golden Horde is invaded. Not much territory is gained, though, as Dathuastani forces reach Astrakhan first and cut off the only way into the rest of the horde's territory.
  • Clipper ships, the fastest possible sailing ships of reasonable size, are now a mainstay of the navy. They quickly bring cargo and passengers from one sea to another and connect the empire to her colonies very easily. Multiple decks allow for many cannons to be mounted as well.
  • For the first time in centuries the code of Kebab is modified. The state adds a new passage on safe sex, noting that STDs are a real threat to society. The sexual revolution gradually dies off as people realize this danger and become hesitant to expose their friskiness.
  • Katia in Britain is blockaded. Many longships attempt to leave the islands, and most are destroyed by clipper cannon fire.
  • The States of the Rising Sword is invaded. Marrakesh is taken.
  • Attempts to populate Errutania, the African colony, and expand trading operations there prove futile. Malaria, among other diseases, proves to be too heavy of a burden on colonists, traders, and soldiers alike. For now the fort remains small and isolated.
  • Friendly relations are established with Songhai.

well that was very rude, a simple no would have worked just fine, now im stuck with this good for nothing pope

A massive invasion force is sent to attack the Golden Horde, but Dathuastani forces are faster and by the time the soldiers land in Latvia the war is essentially over.

im starting to think im cursed to send invasion forces to every nation only to be cockblocked by another nation

@Twisty

Maybe it would help if you tried attacking some nation that was not already under attack or planned to be under attack by others.

That's actually a historically accurate time frame though, muskets were introduced around the early 1300s and stuck around for a long time until they were replaced by rifles which didn't come around until the 1700s.

@Crimeariver:

Technology is not a strictly linear historical development. For instance, the steam engine was almost invented by Hero of Alexandria in first century Egypt. That might sound ridiculous, but if it had been applied practically then the industrial revolution might have happened almost a thousand years before the Chinese invented gunpowder. There is nothing stopping you from inventing the internet before the steam engine, or the atomic bomb before powered flight. Many technologies have no prerequisites besides a civilized society with scientific minds.

Yeah I know about that bit of history and I hate the fact that the greeks never decide to take full advantage of the steam engine but no they decide to stick with slave labor.

That's the thing that's confusing me. If some lived, even if it's a small some, couldn't they just breed a lot.

Soviet Marmalade wrote:

Wait, can we only invent one tech or is it invent one tech PER TURN?

You can only invent one tech per turn but you can steal two tech from other nations in one turn.

Soviet Marmalade wrote:

Wait, can we only invent one tech or is it invent one tech PER TURN?

One per turn. We wouldn't get very far technologically if we could only invent one tech each. In the best situation with no overlap that would have only been 14 technologies.

@Mr.Stalker:

You do not have enough people left to even establish a colony. They could not "just breed a lot" because this force you sent to Britain was an army, not a group of families looking to colonize. Almost all of them were men. What remains of your invasion force is divided and stranded on various beaches in the north Atlantic. You are, unfortunately, knocked out of the game.

@Tech Questions

To further clarify on what Crow said, you can either invent or steal techs. You cannot do both on the same turn. You may steal two at a time or invent only one. Also, I have a new rule for techs: you may establish exactly one of your technologies as a state secret. This tech cannot be stolen and will be denoted with (ss) in your tech list. You do not have to have a state secret tech, but you may if you want. I will also mention this rule in the coming turn.

@Crow

You may lift the secrecy any time you like. You may also change your secret tech to a different tech or even decide that a newly developed tech should be your secret tech the moment that you invent it. Only one tech can be a state secret at any one time.

@Syndic

Also, I have a new rule for techs: you may establish exactly one of your technologies as a state secret.

Is the state secret also part of the restriction? I.e:

You can only do three things: steal 2, invent 1 OR create 1 state secret?

Or can it be this: steal 2 or invent 1 AND create 1 state secret?

@BSOD:

No, of course not. You can assign any existing tech or soon-to-be-invented tech as a state secret. State secrets have nothing to do with gaining tech, I do not see why you think it would replace that.

Tchefuncte Bonaparte wrote:

If multiple countries have invented a tech do we need to specify who we are stealing it from?

Yes, that way I know you are trying to steal from a valid target. You need a trade route with the person you take the tech from and it needs to not be a state secret.

I am writing the turn now. No more edits will be accepted.

TURN 12

  • The loose frontier environment of northwest America requires cooperation for survival, and distant neighbors gradually abandon their distrust for each other. Doonish and Shoshone people eventually make contact and occassionally trade goods with each other. A Shoshone man who calls himself Pathmaker became good friends with a Doonish merchant and has travelled with him through Alaska, Doonish Asia, and then by himself into Europe. While there he converted to Tengriism, believing that the Blood God is a hateful misinterpretation of Tengri, and comes to abandon his previous conceptions of Europeans as warmongers. When he returns home, Pathmaker teaches his people of the world outside America and converts them to Tengriism. Eventually, the Shoshone government attempts to crack down on this dissent, but in doing so incites a revolution. Rebels calling themselves the Pathmakers have risen up against the conservative government, fighting to liberate the nation from its oppressive ancient values.

You may select one of your techs to be a state secret. This tech cannot be stolen by other players and is denoted with (ss) in your tech list. You do not have to use state secrets, this is simply an option for those of you who have techs that you would rather keep to yourself. Only one tech can be a state secret at any one time and you may change which tech that is any time you like.

I am removing the requirement of a trade route to steal tech. The only requirement now is that the tech you are stealing must not be a state secret. Trade routes will no longer be shown on the map due to the fact that, in this era, practically everywhere trades with everywhere and that many lines would be needless clutter (and more work for me).
