Alright, we have a new (horribly ugly) doll that's just popped up.

I doubt any one you are going to buy the thing, but I think we should examine the implications. This "Princess" is popping up only a few months after a certain Royal Wedding that took the Hub by storm, and has the same pink coat as a certain other princess we all know and don't mind all that much.

The chronological implications of going from "Just married" to "young filly" are that the cutie mark crusaders would be adults, or at least very close to adults, and would most definately have earned their cutie marks by then. It would be silly for them to build up the Cutie Mark Crusaders as much as they did and then just have them show up with cutie marks without an episode or two dedicated to them getting their marks.

I mean, I guess it's technically possible they could do a flashback episode like with Cutie Mark Chronicles, but it would seem rather silly to do that idea twice.

Edit: Also, I don't think the picture of the character on the box has the same design as the character in the episode will. She has Sweetie Belle's mane, and I doubt that they would just copy paste mane styles for a new secondary character like that.

That would fall in line with the established pattern of Princess = Alicorn, but maybe they will be breaking that 'rule' now.

Now, I am a little wary of babies just popping out of the woodwork every season or something, but as long as it's handled well, I can go with it.

As for the Sweetie Belle recolor, that's just Hasbro's MO.
Up until pretty recently, Trixie, a character introduced in canon with a unique design, was just a Rarity recolor in the toys.

No way will the show's version of this princess just be a colorized Sweetie Belle with a crown, but in the toy line?

Oh God the plot holes (no dac not that kind of plot hole). Made me quit watching new episodes of the show for a few weeks because it completely ruined my head canon to this very day.

The deal with them being unicorns and pegasi? Technically speaking, it was never established that that wasn't impossible, possibly just rare. It's not a plothole if it's the first instance of something being explained. A bit odd, maybe, possibly fanon-killing, but it's the only canon information on the subject, so it's not a plothole.

Unless you mean something else. Such as their magic and flying, which is the same deal. There was no evidence saying that babies couldn't fly or do magic. In fact, in some media infants have more magical abilities than juveniles, so it isn't unheard of to incorporate that.

Yeah, I wasn't sure what that was, but looking closer, those very well might be wings (though they don't look anything like the shiny wings they put on all the other, adult princesses).

@Fifths: They did already do it with Pumpkin and Pound Cake, like Twins said, so they can probably do it now. I mean, it's not like they made the pregnancy period of ponies canon yet, and not only am I glad they haven't, I'm also never going to ask.

@Solaire: I think the Cakes made it pretty clear to Pinkie that the foals were going to have slight magical outbursts at times. So they're not really consciously using magic; it just happens.

As for my own question; If Skyla becomes a Princess instantaneously on birth…

…well, I'll let General Knoxx speak for me on this one: "Goddamn nepotism."

Also, just off-topic, but when you think about it Skyla is really the most human-like name I've seen assigned to a pony so far (at least until they name one of the backgrounders Bob Johnson).

Well let's see, Friendship is witchcraft features fantastic editing, a well orchestrated custom background score, and elaborate musical numbers… but The Mentally Advanced series is actually funny.

Friendship is Witchcraft gets better later on. The first two episodes were honestly pretty weak, but it gets funnier when they stop trying to dub entire episodes, and edit multiple episodes in order to have scenes that fit their own plot-line. It makes the humor more fluid, and less forced in.

I have to go with FiW. I could never get into the Mentally Advanced series. I think one of the biggest factors is the voice-acting. The Mentally Advanced series has a bunch of goofy, unfitting voices. FiW still has some of that, but it's in moderation. I just don't really get the Mentally Advanced series' humor, either. I watched an episode or two, and half the characters aren't even funny. I liked Rainbow Dash in it, though. Better than FiW Dash, which stopped being funny after a while. But Sweetie Bot is still the best fanon character I've seen.

Mentally Advanced is almost entirely voice acted by one guy who does all of the mane 6 and the CMC. He pretty much worked alone for the first several episodes. I'm actually impressed by that.

It's pretty much the same case for FiW. They got more people sooner, but they had a correlative rise in production value, too, which, in my opinion, made the overall product more impressive. Eh, maybe Mentally Advanced just isn't my thing, I dunno.

Yeah, definitely not my thing. Mentally Advanced Pinkie just annoyed me. That voice was grating, and the lines didn't make up for it to me.

Lately I have been painting human ponies and practicing my art skills.

But I'm afraid I'm making huge mistakes and not even noticing them.

What do you think makes MLP:FIM special? I guess that you have discussed that before, but i haven't seen this topic in the last 200 pages or so.

When i watch an episode, i start to grin after a couple of minutes and this stupid grin usually stays until the end of the episode. What makes this so strange is, that i don't know any other show that provokes this effect to the same extent. Okay there are a lot of shows, which have better puns and deeper humor, but ponies have a fuel that keep the grin beaming.

Of course it has something to do with the voice acting, the well rounded and clever characters and the overall design including the animations, but i think there are other factors that can't be seen so easily.

One for example is that the suspension of disbelief works perfectly here. I don't judge the plausability of the actions and happenings seen on screen. I never had a problem with Pumkin and Pond Cake, as pony genetics are not explained in the show. When you think about it: There is hardly any explanation going on in the show. How does magic work? Why are there three kind of ponies and what are alicorns? Just to name a few.
It is really clever to keep those questions open in order to keep the suspension of disbelief intact. As soon as questions are answered you start to define a set of rules. Right now the rules of equestria are extremly vague, but this helps to accept a fictional world for the viewer.

So what do you think? I actualy love this topic, so you ah can hand in your essays now. I mean any tl;dr will be appreciated.

It has a certain calming effect, I guess. It lets me relax, enjoy something simple, laugh, etc. It shows that there's a lot of crap in the world, but it can be handled with friends and love.

That's not all of it, of course. Like you said, the humor, voice acting, characters, etc. all help make it great, but it does have that indescribable feeling attached on. It has its sad moments, it's sweet moments, and everything else that help piece it together. It has deep characters that you can connect to easily, letting you get into the show easier. It helps you feel the emotions to an extent, helps you understand the story, etc.

Also, the fandom definitely makes it special. Shows unity of a bunch of different people under one unexpected thing. There's a lot of creativity and artistic value in the fandom, as well, with everything you can find across the internet.

It's possible this fandom won't last forever, but we've already went about leaving a big-ass mark on the internet in a fairly short time. That definitely helps make it special.

You basically hit on the main points that I would have brought up.
The primary reason I like the show: I just makes me smile.
Some kind of alchemy happened in the perfect blend of art, animation, voice acting, writing, and sound design that all combines to form 'happy.'

If I had to pick one thing, I would say the characters above all else, make the show.
Not only is each character well-rounded and interesting, they are also all believably different.
Half the entertainment in a lot of episodes is just watching the personalities bounce off of each other.
Rarity and AJ at the sleepover, RD and AJ in the race, Pinkie and Twilight in Pinkie Keen, Fluttershy and everyone in Dragonshy.
All great episodes for me because of that.

I do think you have a point about the vagueness, too.
They've never really stopped to explain the world so you just kinda go with it.
Magic works because it's magic. Shut up. They do what they want.

I don’t know what it is about this show that I like it so much. Maybe it’s the animation, maybe it’s the voice acting, or it could be the fandom like Solaire said. There are some suspensions of disbelief and you could say “It’s a cartoon. It doesn’t need to be explained.” But it’s fun to overanalyze this show because we love it so much, so we can question how the genetics of ponies work (my favorite thing to question is the existence of a hydroelectric dam in Ponyville). Some things in this show are not explained very clearly, but it always makes for a fun topic for discussion.

I have a close friend who is going to art school right now. He's really good too, even got contracted to illustrate a children's book.

If you want, I can show your pictures to him and ask him to critique them.

More and more I find myself coming to the opinion that audiences have a really weird kind of sixth sense to pick up when the creators of an artistic work are genuinely enjoying what they're doing and when it's coming across as forced. The reason mlp is so infectiously happy is more than just that they've got good writing and what not, it's that you can somehow tell that the creators were enthusiastic and enjoying themselves when they made it and that somehow translates over to the audience enjoying the product and being enthusiastic about it.

Are you on deviantArt? That's the only advice I can give – deviantArt is a fickle hellcat. A deviation I posted fifteen days into my account is still my most viewed, most favorited, and is responsible for about half my page views. But I got no followers out of that. None. People with, like, 900 page views have more followers than me. So I had like five watchers up until I started the ATG. Speaking of which, any advice for today's prompt, a physical conflict?

As for messing up, don't worry about it. I've buried everything I'm less than proud of in folders. You'd have to look pretty hard to find anything I made that I didn't like.

I've always been partial to the Mentally Advanced Series. While FiW is very impressive, has good music, good voice work, I've always found the Mentally Advance's total bastardization of the show to be much funnier. Good quality does not always mean funnier, and Thrackerzod would beat Sweetie Bot in a fight any day. We covered this last page, I believe.

You're right, it's a show that I honestly can't watch without smiling. I actually got into it during the height of wrestling season, so I would spend hours on the bus at five in the morning watching some colorful ponies prance about my screen smiling. I used up 95% of my phone's data plan in January, when I've never used more than 30% before or since.

I think it's just good, clean fun. There's not a whole lot of television out there that makes me smile. Sure, a lot of it is funny, and I laugh at the funny parts, but I'm not smiling for the whole show. It's just really nice to draw so much enjoyment from something so innocent. Most humor these days is nothing but exploitation, mocking something or someone for your own benefit. While that's all well and good, a show that doesn't need to be negative is a breath of fresh air.

MLP is probably the only show in all of history for which I will tell you that my favorite character is female. I'm not one for sexism or feminism, but MLP does a great job casting both sexes as equal. Again, it's something different, in a positive way. The characters are well-developed, and a large cast of main and secondary characters does sort of create this world that someone watching can escape to. A world with colorful flying ponies, magic and friendship.

It's bandwagon time! The animation is brilliant. When I first jumped aboard the pony train, I just sort of went along with everyone else talking about the quality. Now that I spend most every one of my waking hours humbly attempting to imitate it, my respect has grown so much. Animation is something I've been feebly attempting for a few years now, and to see such a high quality show created with the exact same means with which I work is very inspiring, to say the least.

Tl;dr: Makes me smile, positive humor, well developed characters, I've become much more appreciative of the animation.

The Mentally Advanced Series is marginally funnier, but honesty, that guy is a extremely subpar voice actor. Everyone sounds pretty much the same, which ruins it for me. If you're going to do all the voices, even if you can't do them perfectly like LittleKuriboh (mai waifu) can, at least make them recognizable. Like Jenny Nicholson is actually pretty great. She may not be 100% show accurate, but she does a very good job of creating her own, unique voices for each character, and improves with each passing episode. The MA guy? You can clearly tell it's one guy doing a bunch of not so different inflections. It annoys me to no end, and for that reason, I like FiW much more.

Yeah, just about sums it up for me. It may not be the best show ever, and I often obsess over every little detail, like the supposed plot holes, the rushed endings, the forced morals, stuff like that, but I still love it because it makes me feel positively happy and innocent. The sense of community and belonging you get from being part of the fandom is a good bonus too, if not the main attraction. Just look at dac. He doesn't consider FiM to be any more than a normal children's show, and doesn't even put it in his top 10 list of television shows, yet he's a brony. If that doesn't speak something to you about the fandom, I don't know what does. My point is, although the show has great animation, lovable characters, a good sense of humour, brilliant voice acting, well-written storylines, and makes you smile, at the end of the day, it's the fandom that makes the show, not the other way around.

Well, it's kind of hard to cast both genders as equal when the male to female ratio in Equestria is approximately 1:9000. But I'd venture to say that stallions are treated fairly and equally in pony society from what little I've seen of them in the show.

Almost forgot to throw in my two cents on FiM vs. Mentally Advanced (as if anyone cares).
I'm going to take the wimpy middle-ground and say I enjoy both of them quite a bit.

FiW:
Love all of the Pinkie Songs.
The voice acting is also very impressive considering the one girl does all of the main six and Apple Bloom and Luna.
Every voice is distinct and carries the characters well.
Sweetie Bot was some weird stroke of genius, too, and is probably my favorite thing to come out of the series so far.

The humor is somewhat hit-or-miss, though.
Most are pretty good, but the Luna episode didn't work very well for me at all and some of the others had some weak moments, too.

Overall, very entertaining, though.

Mentally Advanced:
I actually hadn't seen the original episode parodies from this series until yesterday when it was brought up, only the 'Rainbow Dash Presents:" fanfic rewrites so I'll start there.
"Rainbow Dash Presents:" is great!
Yes, the voices are weird and have no real relation to the canon ones, but they just fit for some reason and make it funny, Dash especially.
Other characters have all been given weird tweaks, too. (I love Thrackerzod and HOO Scootaloo!)
The writing is also impressively funny, though it probably loses some of its flair if you aren't familiar with the stories they are based on.
The art style fits the silly irreverence perfectly, as well, and the effort involved is clear.

Now, the parodies of the canon show? Those are substantially weaker.
In the first one especially, it did just feel like one guy with a microphone saying weird stuff.
I'm glad to see how much he's improved, at least.

Again, I love both series so picking a 'winner' is kind of pointless to me.

I'd, personally, say Mentally Advanced for the humor, but FiW for the effort and artistry. I really like the songs in FiW, but I rarely find it very funny. I don't follow either consistently, though, so I'm not the best to ask for an opinion.

Little Kuriboh and the Yu-Gi-Oh Abridged Series is still better than anything else, though. Because 'MY VOICE GIVES ME SUPER STRENGTH!'
