This controversy has left me feeling very conflicted.
On the one hand, I hate that this happened, and I feel awful that this kid has been driven to such lengths. This behaviour is disgusting, and reading about it makes me feel physically ill.
On the other hand, the sense of empathy which is driving me to feel this way is also why I support social justice work, and why I do also understand how great it is to see better representation on television. I hate seeing people treated badly, and so I support efforts to reduce that treatment. It's a fairly simply equation.
So my anger at the treatment of this kid is combined with revulsion towards the blowback: the gloating against "tumblr" (as if sites can have a personality) or people's gleeful acceptance of any excuse to write yet another anti-"SJW" screed and flood the fandom with as much whitewashed fan art as they can draw. I mean, where were these people back when Gamergate was in full force? Probably, I suspect, apologizing for it, or explaining why its victims had it coming, or claiming that most of the attacks came from trolls (as if that makes things better). But – to be perfectly honest – the attacks on this kid were wrong for the exact same reasons that the pro-GG attacks were wrong. You can't tell people to kill themselves just because they disagree with you. There really isn't a gray area here.
Shitty behaviour knows no ideology, and the hypocritical high-horse attitude that some people have is kind of gross. You know the anger you're feeling now? That's what I've been feeling for the last year! (And people wonder why I get into so many debates.)
The fact is, a lot of people need to look in the mirror and ask themselves whether they're doing this stuff out of a genuine sense of justice, or because they want to score some ideological points.
There's been a lot of people mentioning how the attacks on this kid go against the spirit of the show – which is absolutely true. But what about our responses? If Steven were a KYM user, what would he do? Probably his would resist the temptation to score a cheap ideological point, or to use the pain of one person to inflict further pain on another. And he would do that not because the person being attacked is "on his side," but because attacking other people simply for disagreeing with you is wrong – full stop.
The lesson we should take from this is that we desperately need to be better to each other. The problem here is not social justice or tumblr or identity politics, but our collective pathological refusal to see each other as human beings, and to extend our empathy equally to everyone. People are angry about this – as well they should be – but nobody seems to have learned this lesson. Which means that all we have to do is wait long enough and this is basically guaranteed to happen again.
So even if you can't go out and fix things, can you all at least please, please try your best not to become part of the problem? It's literally the least you could do.
Honestly, I have nothing against social justice itself, social justice is something good not matter how you see it, the problem is the "warrior" part. Because that part makes things about attacking and seeing any different viewpoints as "the enemy". Honestly, I remember when I originally joined tumblr, back in 2012 I originally joined because I wanted to follow all those pony askblogs (with some differents askblogs like one about kyubey), but in the process I discovered what I remember as this wonderful community, it was all so progressive and wonderful, and honestly, I must admit that they DID educate me. I had some slightly bigoted views about trans-sexuality and a bit ignorant about other parts of the LGBTQ community, but then I learned a lot about the experiences of these people, and what they told offered me a lot of insight and expanded my world. But then something happened. I don't know what, but I would say it was a combination of lack of patience and need of attention, but suddenly this community started to became toxic and hostile. Like for one side they were mad that the world hadn't suddenly completely changed in around a year, and at the same time the old issues were apparently too well known now and there was some kind of competence to be more progressive by addressing more and more issues, even if for that you had to grasp at straws or make mountains out of molehills. as they got more mad at "white people" and "cis people" and "white straight men" for not having fixed everything yet, the "special snowflake" syndrome started to show up, probably as a combination of pressure to not be "privileged" and thus the enemy, and seeking of attention as embodying the things you fought for made you likely to be protected and loved by the rest of the community. Things kept getting worse from then on, and all of you can probably say how, because I'm honestly getting tired of typing.
Anyway, the Sad part, is that had there been more patience and had there not been some that poisoned the community with toxic trends, they could really have changed the world for better, as literally a whole generation would have been educated to be much more progressive and open minded, and one day that whole generation would be the ones with power, in charge of the world and would change it for the better. But now? They want to force the world to change, and that's just something you can't do. If you fore someone, you will encounter heavy resistance pulling on the other side. People that would have been otherwise progressive now join the ranks of outright bigots because they don't attack them for not doing enough, and even the things that are changing due to their influence are not always doing so for the better. They are horribly hostile towards the smallest criticism and hold the place as some kind of moral guardians that determine what's right and wrong, so changes go unchecked and some changes that can be easily damaging are let trough because you can't oppose to them without being a bigot/misogynist/homophobic/etc.
Take gamergate for example, I think they way it started was completely wrong from GG side. I mean, a guy who was the ex-boyfriend accused Zoe Quinn of being a slut (I say it again ex-boyfriend since when are bitter exes of any sex are worth their word?) it was definitely a mysoginistic attack by a bunch of 4chan losers. But it wasn't such a big deal. But then way too many sites, many of high profile, decided to attack gamers as a whole as a bunch of misogynistic pigs. Now first, "gamer" is not a community, is a word that denominates every single person that has video games as an important hobby. That's a group that includes hundreds of millions. You can't just insult so badly that much people (that also happen to be your main audience) without instilling an outright consumer revolt. Also, so many sites saying the same thing at the same time also proved what the assholes that started everything were saying was right: the video game press was closely connected behind the scene and could manipulate things to favor some things and damage others. And yes, there were many harrasing assholes in gamergate, but it was unorganized group of millions, thousands of assholes are to be expected. And some of those weren't inetended as harrasment, but rightly pissed off people complaining to the people that felt attacked them, which when mutiplied by the massive group you just pissed off, can feel like harassment because you can't deal with this much being throw back at you.
but all in all feel gamer gate was just a huge mess that benefited no one, and no one came out better of it: The sites that started the attack had a sudden drop in consumer base and lost of sponsors, to the point that several outright closed, people got fired and so on, and gamers were still painted as misogynistic pigs in the eyes of the world. I personally would prefer it had never happened.
Oh goddamnit, apparently people on 8chan are trying to make fake anti-Zamii blogs on tumblr.
I don't really know what else to say about this, but it must be terrible for her going through what she is, the show has a really bad side to the fanbase, and tumblr has much more whackjobs than I thought.

Wait, what?
Where?
Edit: I'm looking through 8ch and I'm not seeing shit about that.
Any thoughts on this? I think I could get behind such a movement like this.
Edit: No these are not my posts.

Ah, alright then. Thanks.
Well, shit.
Edit: On a brighter side, Zamii's also getting tons of support on a different 8ch board.
Edit 2: Not just 4chan's /co/. I was talking about 8ch's.

Yep, that's great. I saw that some people on 4chan's /co/ were going to write her some supportive letters to her P.O. box (which she had listed on tumblr). I don't know how many got sent but I know one dude kept asking the thread how he should write his letter, or if he should sign it from /co/.
Well, let's have something much more lighthearted:
I'm kind of afraid to know what makes that one of his favourites.
Not saying it's a bad episode, it's one of my favourites too, but I have to wonder if they're planning something.
How did our gallery go from mostly shitty edits to NSFW in such a short time?
^You can thank That Guy for that. Who by the time of this posting, just joined KYM 5 hours ago, seemingly with a drive to upload nsfw su images into the site without really tagging and titling them properly. In the time I've spent in a fandom on KYM, all of them has that guy. The bigger the fandom the larger the contribution of that guy is.
I wish I knew… :/
We should go easy on the NSFW content.
So we know that Pearl wasn't built for fighting, at all, but she trained and taught herself how to fight using swords, how to summon her weapon and how to fight with it, how to build stuff and so on.
But in the guide, it says that Rose wanted to not only experience giving birth to a child, but also to let her child (Steven) be able to learn and grow like a human being. So does this mean that Rose had Pearl as a sort of test animal, on whether or not Gems could learn how to do things they weren't meant to do?
On a more unrelated note, I found this Google document which has links to various SU speculation fanart, like fusions and such.
New short, this time on fusions.
Framerate is a bit shitty, unfortunately.
>The best reason to fuse is love
Seriously could they pound it into our heads any harder that Ruby and Sapphire are a lesbian couple? I can't wait to see the deniers find a way around this one.

Are there still deniers?
Also I'm disappointed that they didn't mention if Steven can fuse with other Gems or not, but I guess that's for a future episode.

Well there is the very reasonable argument of "they're agender space rocks not humans they don't work that way" but at the same time they have feminine voices, bodies, and even their names are pretty feminine.
So while its not technically canon that they're "lesbians" it's implied subtly.

That's what I say. They can't really be lesbians because they would have to be female, which they are not. I always felt it was kinda cheap to consider them "lesbian representation" when before they came to Earth, there wasn't even an option to be "straight"
Talking about lesbians…
Hey guys! Remember this?
We all assumed that it was a case of crap past the Radar, but I just realized how exactly it works.
You know this right?
Now, I'm gonna play captain obvious and say that the hands represent the male and female genitals, but, let's say that it was instead two females but motions remained the same. How would it look? Maybe…
Pretty Brilliant (and pretty lewd).

I know of at least one blog on tumblr dedicated to denying romantic relationships between gems that was active at least a month ago, so yeah they're still around.
I'm honestly becoming annoyed now how in the comment section for the Zamii controversy you've got people upvoting comments where people blame the ENTIRE fandom and or the show itself for what happened and say stuff like "I bet the show's ratings will tank now or it'll get cancelled," and downvoting comments saying "can we please separate this controversy from the show itself? The show wasn't directly responsible for this, it doesn't advocate bullying."
Basically way too much guilt by association going on and it's really bothering me. I'm a fan of SU who absolutely hates what happened to Zamii, don't lump me in with that vocal minority of assholes, and seriously taking out anger on the show itself is not going to help.

That's because the whole page has become an echo chamber of "Fuck Tumblr/SJW"
I doubt many people are there now because of the show or sympathy for Zamii.

I only really visit the page on the off chance that there have been any new developments, the whole "FUCK SJW'S" thing is stupid, it should be FUCK BULLYING TWATHEAD'S, Zamii herself seems to be alot happier now, so the focus should be on making sure something like this never happens again, target those who are bullying others on the internet and report them to the nessiary admins, and don't tar everyone in the fandom, more SU fan's where disgusted at this mess than there where celebrating it and hailing those responsable as heroes
By the way guys, today marks Steven Universe's 2nd anniversary.

2 year anniversary?
Bring out the dancing men
Anyway regarding the controversy, look I don't like what some of the fans did to Zamii too, BUT I can't keep my mouth shut anymore and I have to get this off my chest, I really really hate how because of this people are calling all the fandom, saying it's "fandom" ever and we should feel bad it. No-less posting with a picture saying it, isn't helping either.
^ Well, if you didn't participate in attacking her you've nothing to feel bad for, and you should know that they're not referring to, or talking about you.
@Fusion Short
This short was a bit too short ._.
For a moment I thought we weren't going to get a short soon. I thought I had to be satisfied with Poofle Universe (which tbh is kinda cute) for the week. The video coming out on a Thursday is also a funny coincidence.
Speaking of Fallout, I don't know if there are any nuclear energy fanatics over here, but I've been wondering out of stark curiousity… How does radiation affect gemstones? And then how would it affect the Crystal Gems? Their bodies are essentially made up of light with mass, can radiation distort their proportions? I found this interesting Wikipedia article that sorts of answers my question. Still, I'm curious if the gemstones of the gems can become conduits of radiation. I also actually thought that maybe corrupted gems are the result of irradiating gems but I honestly don't think the show would introduce nuclear apocalypse into the mix.

Oooooooh my god you guys I think we have been waiting for an episode that tackled this subject for a long time now.
I'm actually really surprised it's coming back in January, that feels so soon! I was expecting all the shows that are on hiatus to come back in, like, March.
My body is so ready for this hiatus to end.
In other news, Steven Universe was 2015’s most reblogged animated TV show (as if there was ever any question). Rebecca Sugar put out a short little video thanking the fans and it’s really adorkable.
So… the list of episodes has one called "Message Received" and it's followed by "Log date 7 15 2" which the description saying that "Steven sneaks a listen to a friends audio diary". Based on this, I'm guessing that the message mentioned… It's the one Peridot sent back in "Cry for help", so in this episode other homeworld gems will probably show up. This would also explain how can Steven sneak a listen from Peridot's audio diary in the next episode: It's very likely that Peridot leaves the group and the recorder too. I'm kinda afraid of what's going to happen exactly in those episodes.
So… In Tumblr, they mentioned that in an old Q&A Rebecca Sugar mentioned that Steven's age was a "spoiler" when asked about it; so, there is this theory circulating that it's because Steven is actually either actually noticeably younger or older than he looks, and that's the reason why he doesn't go to school and this will be revealed in the upcoming birthday episode. Personally, I'm not buying the theory yet, but I do find it interesting and possible enough to be worth mentioning.
You wouldn't happen to have a sauce for that Q&A would you?

I don't think they said that his age was a spoiler, just that it haven't been mentioned yet. Of course, it could be that Steven is around 6 years old, or even younger considering that Gems come out as "adults".

Sorry, no, I'm just passing what I heard, so better take this info with a grain of salt.
New promo, everyone!
So apparently, Steven's canonical age is… 14.
Zaccharine wrote:

Notice how he is in fact, bigger (His clothes don't fit well anymore, Connie, who is always portrayed as taller, looks shorter than him).
Also, the tumblr theory that I stated up there was true after all.
