RWBY General 2.0: A Fresh start

Right, I forgot to post my introspective for the new episode on Saturday.

Anyway, I can’t really say anything Team Arkos hasn’t already, other than Yang and Weiss getting a crash course in Shit We Already Know 101 and bringing themselves up to speed (it’s good that more people know what’s going on). And, it’s good to see 3/4 of RWBY back together.

If the last few seasons are a good benchmark, then things should start picking up either in the next episode, or the one after that.

Something slightly unexpected: In order to encourage people to buy all their playsets and toys, RT has released a bonus episode of RWBY Chibi. See here.

Il admit even though this episode was just advertisement , it was perfectly executed.
Not just did we get a matrix reference but i had a sensible chuckle at the 'Big One's' Reveal.

God Damn it RT. You had a great premise with Ilia and Blake being 'Once was friends but now on opposites sides of a growing war, but still kinda cares for each other.' tension going on. But nope, you changed Ilia around so she's lesbian for Blake. But Blake hetro and isn't thinking of Ilia like that.

I would be fine with Coco admitting she's Bi. I'm fine with Emerald admitting she's lesbian for Cinder. I'll even be fine with Yang coming out with being Bi or Bi curious. It fits in perfectly within character for them to be that way. But not so much with Ilia. Mostly due to that we have seen so little of her and her still kinda a fresh new character to the show.

Basically I think RT did this as a sop to their alphabet soup wing of their fan base. It's a poor excuse in script writing and is a poor thing to add to Ilia development.

Kinda of a side note, RWBY as a show works just fine with the sexual elements toned down. example: Blake's banter with Sun and Nora with Rin are just perfect and shows and tells the viewer exactly what they need to know.

Lastly Ghira is AWESOME and so bad ass! I hope he lives though all this.

That seems to be an unfortunate pitfall a lot of writers stumble into when writing gay characters- they get so caught up on the “gay” part that they forget about the “character” part. I feel if RT had been focused on more than just filling some imaginary diversity quota, then they would’ve made another, more well-established character gay and given them a new avenue down which they could develop, rather than creating a character whose “gay-ness” is their sole defining trait.

What is often a worse event in many shows writers, is they take a character who most of the audience have assumed to be strait or sexuality is unimportant, then BAM! They're GAY! and none of the characters around them had any idea they where after a long time spent together. Then that point is never brought up again, or it's used to cause needless friction in relationships around them. Oh, and an even worse way writers take it is to completely alter the character into another direction that often causes plot problems and complaints among the fans. Granted, that often happens when a new writer takes over, or someone else meddles with the script.

On a meta note. Seeing how much of a death world Remnant really is, due to the Grimm, being gay should have been seriously frond on. Mostly do to the fact they will not have kids. This world more or less demands that both humans and faununs breed as much as they can to offset the death toll the Grimm, bandits, warfare, and the harsh world they live in push. That and abortion clinics are also to not exist on Remnant as well. The Grimm appear to ensure the world will never have to face over population. Ever.

I'm digressing. Anyway, also have to note that Ilia, not only turned out to be Gay, but STILL will side with Adam. I have the feeling Ilia will not be redeemed. I'm still holding out hope that Emerald can pull s Heel-face turn.

I’m not very hopeful about Emerald making a turn. Ilia might, but it’ll come down to whether she cares more about Blake more than she cares about the White Fang’s mission, and if she chooses Blake, it’s a choice that will almost certainly get her killed.

It’s Saturday.

I see that Blake is still somewhat of a sore spot with Yang. Glad to see they didn’t just brush it off, but it’s not likely to be resolved until the two of them meet up again.

And speaking of Blake, she needs to get out of Menagerie. Her character arc, and by extension her development is only going to continue to stagnate as long as she stays there. Though it looks like evens may force her to finally take action. And as a sidenote, I can’t help but feel like Blake’s current arc is something that should’ve happened during Vol. 4, at least partially.

On an irrelevant note, the Christmas hiatus is coming up at some point. I hope they don’t decide to leave things at a cliffhanger again.

So, what will it be Raven? Will you betray your ideals by bending your knee to an enemy you know will betray you the moment you cease to be useful to them? Or will you betray your ideals by running for help from a man that you declared your enemy?

…I have to give Vernal some credit (and I can’t believe I’m actually saying that). I fully expected her to turn traitor the moment Cinder entered the scene. Though I’m not discounting the possibility it might just happen later on.

Last edited Dec 16, 2017 at 01:39PM EST

Of course, Raven is trying to justify her choice to run away as being “smart.” How utterly expected. And it’s good to see Qrow and Ozpin having a bit of savviness, Although I’m going to be taking everything Oz says with a grain of salt.

As for Ilia…
…
…Call me crazy, but I get the feeling that she’s being set up for an even greater fall.

Also, oh my god the Volume’s almost over.

I know were supposed to wait till Saturday before we talk about the new episode, and I’m sorry… but this can’t wait.

Dear Rooster Teeth,

I must admit, I haven’t been a fan of RWBY for very long. In fact, I only started following the series during the hiatus shortly after Monty Oum’s passing. But, latecomer though I was, I quickly became enamored by the series. And I wasted no time in investing time, my emotions, and even money into supporting the series. But gradually, events in the series caused me to question whether my investment was a wise decision. And the events of the most recent episode have caused me to conclude that all that I have invested in the series has indeed been wasted.

It is always said that it is darkest before dawn. But as time goes on, it has become increasingly clear that there will be no dawn. That there is no light at the end of this tunnel. That the sun has set once and for all for Remnant, never to rise again.

I’m tired. I’m tired of seeing our heroes run themselves ragged, only to come up short every single time. I’m tired of watching characters I care for die meaningless deaths. I’m tired of seeing our heroes fight so hard, and sacrifice so much, all for the sake of the world that doesn’t deserve to be saved. And I’m tired of seeing you take love from your fans, only to use that same love to hurt them. I reached a point where… I want Salem to win. I want Cinder to kill every last one of our heroes. Because if nothing else, once they die, it will be over. I can live with the grief. I can live with the disappointment. But what I can’t live with anymore is this never-ending cycle of having my hopes raised, only to see them crushed, over and over again.

I’m sorry, but I can no longer find it within myself to care about what happens to the characters of this series.

Then you are weak. The show isn't even done yet and you have given up. This isn't the first story that has left me like what you are feeling now. But toughen up and think of this. Ozpin and Blake hasn't been brought fully into play yet. I have a feeling that either Oz will pull a 'Groundhog day' time control loop for our Heroes, turning this into a brutal but effective training method. At least until they become better at handling Cinder and her crew for real. Or All of this will finial awaken Jaune's hidden power of both defensive and/or healing. Restoring Weiss and Ruby back into the fight.

Heck, there could also another wild card I hadn't thought up yet.

So just remember.
DON'T!
GIVE!
UP!

Oh yea, RT still has volumes worth of story Monty Om left behind. This isn't the end of the girls.

Im sorry if you're angry about my reaction but there is a reason behind this.
I too joined the RWBY fandom after Monty's death….from fanfics
I was reading a fic from a writer that I follow who made a Fallout/RWBY fic.
The story sounded interesting and I decided to check it out.
At as I glanced at the first piece of Romans walk cycle…and this was my reaction…

It was not a first good impression.
But I decided to stick around and watch the show and after a while, it grew on me. Sure there was a bit of cringy humor here and there but most of the time I really liked it.
the Volum 3 came…
And Holy Shit.
I.FUCKING.LOVE.VOLUME 3
You see, one problem I had with Vol 1 and 2 was that it felt not just a bit childish at times…but the biggest problem was beacon academy. Beacon was like this bubble that the Characters were stuck in, keeping them from growing in character.
Volume 3 took this setting and turned up the dial.
Characters died and Beacon was destroyed. Now the characters could grow because they were taken out of their comfort zone.
Now vol 4 was kinda boring…but there were two things I loved about it.
1. The Animation has become A LOT better.
2. The story was not just going somewhere (lore-wise) but the show felt…more mature.
It was maturing.
It was actually Growing.
It wasn't perfect, but frankly, I enjoyed vol 4 a lot more than 2 and 1
Now at Vol 5, it feels like a mix between vol 3 and 4. The first half was about explaining things and trying to fill plot holes and expand lore…while the second half is working on the action and interaction.
Now about the issue, you are talking about…are you fucking serious.
The fact that they were gonna fight against each other was freaking obvious. And it pretty obvious that Someone is gonna die/get injured or else there would be no drama and no thrill.
Ruby got knocked out, and Weiss got stabbed in the kidney so what? The Fight isn't over!
We still have Blake who not just stopped a plot of the white fang and got her lesbian BFF on her side again and who is coming to save Haven. Maybe Haven will fall…it won't and all will be well in the end…or maybe it will end on a bittersweet note , with them having saved Haven but at the cost of the orb and Weiss's kidney (BTW love the memes). But in the end, you have to remember that the volume isn't over.
I mean do you really want them to defeat cinder and her goons, and then Cinder goes all like 'NEXT TIME I WILL GET YOU RUBY ROSE!!" like a cartoon villain?
I want Drama!
I Want them to suffer!
I Want them all to get treated like shit…because in the end…
In the end the Satisfaction of them Defeating these villans will be SO GOOD!
But you also can't really put that in the 5th outta 12th season.
You need to develop this tension….this rivalry…this antagonism towards each other
I mean I think from all the Characters in the show that grew the most was Jaune.
Sure at his state, he could Never defeat cinder.
But I believe that he Will become stronger
He Will become the badass we all want him to become
and he will get his vengeance.
Otherwise, that would make him into a mary sue.

If you don't want to watch then fine by me, go watch SaO or some other shit
But if you want to fully appreciate they pay off, by patiently waiting for other favorite characters to develop…well
in the words of my Gunny at the Army (Yes I am in the swiss army)
"Grow a pair and sit your ass tightly there princess!"
I really don't mean this in a bad way man and I am trying to be as nice as possible at the moment my dude…
But for me, this is a very stupid reason to leave the show.
Its the exact opposite of what I think.
But in the end, you have your opinion and I have mine.

I never said I would stop watching. I will at least have the courtesy to finish the season. But I no longer have any emotional investment in these people, and have no hope or expectation that this series will have a satisfying conclusion.

…Right. Looking back on what I wrote here, and I won’t deny that a lot of it is seriously overblown. I understand that conflict is the heart and soul of any media, and that heroes have to struggle and fight to get what they want. But, it hurts to watch them fight so hard, and end up getting so little out of it. I know it’s not going to be easy, but it can be exhausting to see a glimmer of hope, only to watch it get snuffed out again and again.

I hope you can forgive my melodramatics. And you can go ahead and disregard my reply up above. I get that bad things happen, but good things need to happen too. Heroes who never win can be just as boring and frustrating to watch as ones that never lose.

You know what? I'm getting frustrated with RWBY too. Not because it is too dark, but because it is too slow and there are just too many flaws to ignore. Based on the lack of activity on the forums and comments section, I'm not alone. I'll keep watching, but it is unlikely I will stick around for a decade-plus story that could have been told in half that time.

I slightly disagree with you here. The pace is just fine for me.Too many people have no attention spans anymore. I know there are some flaws but I can ignore them as they are not that glaring to me.

Well the quietness might be due to work, holidays and such taking up other's time.

So, we finally get to see the long-awaited Jaune versus Cinder fight. I have to admit, I didn’t expect things to go very well for Jaune. But somehow, they managed to make things even worse by having Weiss get caught in the line of fire.

I knew it! I just knew episode 12 would be the turn around point! Jaune unlocked his power and now he can HEAL OTHERS. All he needs is a full suit of armor and he can pass as a WoW resto spec-ed Paladin. Major plot twists and Cinder fucked up again! Things don't look that bad now.

The current pacing feels like they REALLY want full-hour length episode but at the same time keeping half-hour length episode.

I could simply edit a couple of Chapters in Vol. 5, while restructuring scenes (as an example, l could combine Vol. 5's Chapter 5 to 8 into one Episode while moving different scenes of those selected chapters into a different episode) to better fit its 'full-hour length" format and you can feel like…there's some progress with the story.

So now that the cats out of the bag. Or should I say the bird flew the nest? I was not surprised by the twist because I thought it was openly said in the beginning of the volume. So when everyone was like "Vernal is the Spring Maiden!" I was confused as hell. Happy with the result because that means Raven isn't a bad person who abandoned her child for no reason. But confused as hell.

Is anyone else glad that Jauney boi can do something besides getting smacked around like a ragdoll? I mean, he's been here since day one. Even his leadership isn't up to par just yet.

I do have one question that has been hanging around from vol 4 no one as even asking yet.

Where is Tyrian?

We know Salem didn't discard him. Hell, she gave him a new tail. But we haven't seen a thing of him. I bet Salem ordered him to kill off Raven's clan while she was away at the Haven fight. An event of spite and sure fire way to crush Raven emotionally, even if she did win. If that is the case, Raven would have lost everything and burned bridges to anyone else who could have cared for her.

He did get a piece of his tail sliced off. I’m sure Salem would rather have her… tools be in top form before sending them back out into the field, so he’s probably getting that fixed.

Probably by grafting some Grimm body part onto the missing area.

Even with out his tail, he could still mop the bandit camp up in moments. Lets face it, If it wasn't for Raven or Vernal, that bandit gang would easy to crush for a skilled hunter. If Shadyman is the average fighting level of that gang, they are not a threat to Tyrian. Still in his madness in worshiping Salem, he would be much more driven to kill that gang if Salem ordered it to prove himself to her.

Now I don't know if he'll get a cyborg tail, Grimm tail, or a regenerated normal tail. But I'm sure we will find out soon.

After so many incorrect predictions about what would happen, I finally manage to get something right: Cinder did in fact have some horrible Grimm appendage fused to her flesh.

Also, did anyone around here toss out the possibility that Raven was the Spring Maiden? I feel like someone did at some point.

Cinder having a grimm for an arm was obvious from last volume. I'll admit, I didn't expect Raven being the spring maiden too. But then, she isn't a 'maiden' but an official Milf. It appears the qualification of being a 'maiden' is much broader than we realized. If so, is Glynda one too?

And the HUGE plot twists in this episode as well! No wonder RT added two more to this volume. They couldn't do it all in 12 episodes!

And then there was Nora being awesome. It doesn't help that Hazel is using an element that just super powers her.

And of course ______ arrives and what happens to _____ and _____.

Lastly, watch out, the White Knight shippers are on the ascendancy now. I still refuse to give up my Arkos damn it!

Oh damn it! I just realized that Jaune's Semblance was already unveiled way back in the official RT RWBY: Grimm Eclipse game! In the game, Jaune uses his aura to recharge other Character's aura. We all thought it was just game mechanics and ignored it, but now IT REALLY IS THAT! Grimm Eclipse is indeed canon to the show's story. RT played us all like a damn fiddle!

Oh, I got it.

Still, What an ending to this volume! I for one loved it.

Season 6 Bingo:

Cinder Survived
Pyrrha Is Resurrected
Adam Is Killed
Tyrion Returns
Oscar Wins A Fight
Weiss' Family Returns
More Renora Shipping
RWBY Meets/Fights Salem
A New Relic Is Revealed
A New Maiden Is Revealed
Dr. Arthur Watts Fights The Heroes
Yang Vs. Raven
Qrow Dies
Another Giant Grimm Is Shown

Well. Here we are. The end of the road. I actually have quite a bit to say about this one.

I know some people were a bit unhappy with how the fight between Adam and Blake turned out, but I for one was actually okay with it.

I think one of Yang’s lines is probably the most apt summary of Raven’s character: "You may be powerful, but that doesn’t make you strong."

And after so many death predictions, I managed to get one right. Though considering how many I was tossing out, I was bound to get one right eventually.

Oh that’s fucking rich, Salem. You sit on your throne, having your pawns fight your battles for you, and you have the audacity to call also a coward.

How long do you think it’ll take for the characters to put two and two together and neutralize Emerald so she can’t fool them with her illusions?

After two years, it’s nice to see everyone together onscreen again.

Wonder what’s up with Oscar? Could the strain of being bonded with Oz be putting too much strain on him?

If Tai has any sense at all, then the only thing Raven will be getting from him is the finger, and the boot.

As it stands, Haven is safe, the White Fang is scattered with their leader on the run, the Relic is secure, and Cinder, arguably Salem’s greatest asset, is missing and presumed dead. After so long, this is exactly what the protagonists needed: a decisive victory, one that can’t be nullified by later events, and that can’t somehow be twisted to the villain’s advantage.

My thoughts on Salem run like this. She is a counter point to Ozpin, same dieing/reincarnate cycle as him, but instead of giving her magical powers to the worthy, she is selfishly re-enchanting herself every cycle to being able to create and control the Grimm. I wouldn't be surprised she's getting low on the magic juice as Ozpin is. Salem only is thought as powerful due to her Grimm control and being a VERY persuasive speaker and fooling everyone that she's more dangerous than she really is.

As for Emerald, She is likely based on SEEING the illusion. going at her blindfolded might block that power out.

Wait, guys. I just realized one good reason why Neptune, Scarlet, and Sage never showed in the last two volumes. They maybe be already dead. Why do I think this? Mostly due to what Sun told Blake when they were on the boat. That Neptune, Scarlet and Sage all were heading to Vale in a much faster way than the rest of the cast was. So while Sun was making Dark sun ship cannon, I would venture to say that Neptune, Sage and Scarlet got tired of waiting and was running low on cash. Well that or got board waiting for Sun to show up.

The three likely signed up as huntsmen and took on some jobs to do for money. Then Leo got his hands on their info and then passed it off to Salem's goons. So sooner or later, Tyrian, Hazel, or another evil bad ass paid the three a lethal visit. They SHOULD have been in Vale waiting on them. But Qrow couldn't find them OR ANYONE.

Granted there can still be other possibilities why RT never brought them back into the show. But after seeing how Volume 5 ended, I fear the worst had happened.

Miles confirmed they're all alive in the second to last RWBY Rewind of Volume 5.

Well, that's great to know. Not that i'll ever find out seeing the RT put that show behind a pay wall.

Yang vs. Adam or Yang vs. Raven fight is definitely going to happen I think. Maybe a main cast death.

This is a few weeks late but.

I'll just count Yang basically roasting Raven into submission as my prediction being right.
