Overview
The 2025 Vine Return Rumor, also known as the 2025 Vine Revival, refers to a viral rumor and discourse that the 2017 discontinued short-form video hosting service Vine could potentially return in 2025 after its co-founder Rus Yusupov launched a Vine-inspired meme coin (called "Vine Coin" or "$VINE") in mid-January 2025, a cryptocurrency on the Solana blockchain, and began posting about the app after a long hiatus. The speculation was further fueled when X / Twitter owner and entrepreneur Elon Musk hinted at a possible revival of the service on his platform, which sparked discussions, memes and jokes about Vine's return amid the potential of a U.S. TikTok ban.
Background
On January 19th, 2025, X[1] user @SawyerMerritt tagged X owner Elon Musk in a tweet asking for the revival of the short-form video hosting app and platform Vine, to which Musk replied, "We’re looking into it," amassing more than 480,000 views and 4,900 likes in five days.
Musk had previously posted about Vine's revival on October 30th, 2022, in a poll on X[5] asking whether the video app should be restored. The post (seen below) received over 223,000 likes and 32,000 reposts in three years, showing that 69.6 percent of participating users supported the restoration of Vine.
Developments
Vine Meme Coin / $VINE
Shortly after the post from Elon Musk hinting at a potential revival of the short-form video platform, the former Vine co-founder Rus Yusupov[2] began posting on his X / Twitter account after more than a year of being inactive and launched a meme coin called "VINE Coin" or "$VINE" on January 22nd, 2025. The post about the crypto token's launch (seen below) received more than 2.3 million views and 2,200 reposts in two days.
The token is fueled on the Solana blockchain and reached a $230 million market cap a day after its announcement,[9] receiving numerous articles covering it from various publications in late January 2025.[3][7][8]
Online Reactions
Numerous reactions, memes and discussions emerged about the possible return of Vine in 2025, especially regarding Elon Musk's intentions and the possible adjustments he would input into the platform, like his decision to rebrand Twitter to X in July 2023.
For instance, on January 19th, 2025, X[4] user @TristanBeMe101 replied to a tweet about Elon Musk's potential plans to revive Vine, writing, "I'm 1000% sure he isn't smart enough to keep the name VINE and will just call it fucking V." The post (seen below) amassed over 4.2 million views and 253,000 likes in five days.
On January 20th, 2025, TikTok[6] user @jaxxchismetalk posted a video relating Vine's revival with the 12-hour TikTok ban in the United States following the January 19th deadline, after which the service was restored. The post (seen below) received roughly 14,000 views and 660 likes in four days.
