550 ÷ 2 = 225 or 550/2 refers to a series of math memes, mostly image macros, expressing shock that 550 divided by 2 does not equal 225, but instead equals 275. Memes about the equation started spreading on Vietnamese social media as early as 2019 and went viral on English-speaking social media in late 2022. The equation is similar to 33 + 77 = 100, which became the subject of similar memes in early 2022.
Origin
The earliest known memes about 550÷2 not equalling 225 are from Vietnamese Facebook pages. On February 20th, 2019, Facebook[1] page i just want some meme urm posted a meme that includes the equation, garnering over 600 reactions in four years. On March 11th, 2020, Facebook[2] page Page meme của TKN nhưng chủ yếu là stolen posted another meme featuring the equation, garnering over 2,300 shares and 3,700 reactions in three years. On November 17th, 2022, Redditor HeWhoSmelt posted a version of the meme to /r/mathmemes[3] using American Psycho footage, garnering over 460 upvotes in two months (shown below).
Spread
Memes about the equation gained virality in multiple countries, inspiring many Arabic memes about it. For example, on November 21st, 2022, Arabic Facebook[4] meme page Wael Abd Elmoneam posted a Breaking Bad meme using the equation, garnering over 190 reactions in two months (shown below, left). On November 26th, Portugese Instagram[5] user odezinhof posted the same meme using the equation, garnering over 7,000 likes in two months. On November 27th, a Redditor posted another version of the meme to /r/me_irl,[6] garnering over 12,900 upvotes in roughly the same span of time. On December 24th, Twitter[7] user @Adnan42017 posted a Chainsaw Man version of the meme, also using the "77+33" equation, garnering over 38,000 likes and 4,100 retweets in a month (shown below, right).
