The original meme was posted to Reddit in 2021 and spread over the following years as users photoshopped new images over the originals.

On April 11th, 2021, Redditor u/SappharY posted a meme to /r/goodanimemes^[1] featuring a photograph of a stone statue on the left labeled "ancient goddess statue" and an image of an anime figurine on the right labeled "modern goddess statue," garnering over 12,000 upvotes in two years (shown below).

The meme became the subject of edits over the following years. On April 22nd, 2021, Redditor u/frankdarkness posted a version of the meme to /r/goodanimemes^[2] that gained over 4,900 upvotes in two years (shown below, left).
