Anime Camera Angles, also known as Don't You Think Camera Angles in Anime Can Be a Little Weird, refer to a series of memes parodying the tendency of anime studios to select the camera angles which sexualize the characters, usually by leveling the camera with their buttocks.

Origin

While jokes highlighting intentionally sexual camera angles in anime have been circulated before,^[1][2] primarily in reference to Sword Art Online anime series, the first meme featuring the dialogue "Don't you think camera angles in anime can be a little weird" was posted by Tumblr user incorrecsaoquotes based on a Sword Art Online scene on July 20th, 2015 (shown below).^[3] The post gained over 56,800 likes and reblogs in four years.

Spread

In the following years, the image was widely circulated online, appearing on Cheezburger,^[4] Facebook,^[5] Funnyjunk^[6], Reddit^[7] and other websites. For example, a December 14th, 2016, repost of the image by J-List Facebook group gained over 7,600 likes in three years.^[5]

On April 21st, 2018, Redditor lonovone posted the earliest known derivative of the meme in /r/animemes subreddit, with the post gaining over 900 upvotes in six months (shown below).^[8]

On April 25th, 2018, Redditor Olive-Peel reposted the original meme in /r/anime_irl subreddit, with the post gaining over 30,100 upvotes in six months.^[9]

Starting in December 2018, the trend gained a significant presence in /r/animemes subreddit, with multiple variations of the joke posted in the following months.
