Anime Girl Hiding From a Terminator refers to a humorous fanart of THE iDOLM@STER character Nono Morikubo hiding from a T-800 Terminator. In February 2020, the image gained popularity as an object labeling format following a viral Reddit post.

Origin

On April 17th, 2019, Twitter^[1] user @tonmoh posted a humorous fanart which depicts THE iDOLM@STER character Nono Morikubo hiding from a T-800 Terminator under an office desk (shown below). The tweet received over 1,700 retweets and 4,800 likes in one year.

On the same day, Twitter^[2] user @Harucide posted the first known meme based on the image, with the post receiving 19 retweets and 70 likes in one year (shown below).

Spread

Prior to February 2020, the image saw moderate spread as an object labeling exploitable among Spanish-speaking users on Facebook and Twitter. For example, a May 12th, 2019, post by Facebook^[3] group Trapitos en 4D •ᵜ• received 70 reactions, with a June 9th Twitter^[4] repost gaining 60 likes (shown below, left). A December 3rd, 2019, post by Memes Feos de Monitas Chinas Facebook^[5] Group received over 300 reactions and 2,400 shares (shown below, right), with the meme being reposted by other Facebook^[6] groups in the following weeks.

On Reddit, the first known meme based on the format was posted by Redditor^[7] Quajek in /r/PresidentialRaceMemes on February 16th, 2020, with the post acquiring over 530 upvotes in three days (shown below, right). The format did not see further spread until on February 18th Redditor^[8] 2018InANutshell posted a meme which received over 79,200 upvotes in the /r/dankmemes subreddit in one day (shown below, right).

Following 2018InANutshell's post, the format gained a significant presence in meme communities on Reddit.
