AOC Is Fat Discourse refers to a series of posts largely made by right-wing social media users, including far-right activist and conspiracy theorist Laura Loomer, suggesting that U.S. Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (AOC) is getting fat, with Loomer claiming that she put on 50 pounds since getting into Congress. The tweets began on June 8th, 2025, after the Team AOC X / Twitter account posted a clip of AOC speaking at a National Puerto Rican Day event in New York City. The tweets inspired discourse and memes on social media in the following days, including posts both defending and further attacking AOC, attacking Laura Loomer back and photoshops imagining how Loomer must see AOC.

Origin

In December 2024, rumors that AOC was pregnant started spreading online, which she denied. Some took this to mean that AOC had simply gained weight, with right-wing content creators using this to make memes and jokes about her.

On June 8th, 2025, the @TeamAOC X^[1] account posted a video of AOC speaking at an event for National Puerto Rican Day, garnering over 5,200 likes in two days.

That day, X^[2] user @JoeyMannarinoUS quoted the clip, writing, "AOC has been eating very heartily. Those arms are large and in charge," garnering over 6,900 likes in two days. This is one of the earliest viral examples of the claim.

Spread

The sentiment spread over the following days as people continued to call AOC fat in reference to the clip. Most notably, on June 8th, 2025, X^[3] user and far-right activist @LauraLoomer quote-reposted the clip, writing, "Yikes. AOC has gained at least 50 pounds since getting into Congress. She’s getting massive," garnering over 29,000 likes and 6,000 reposts in two days.

Later that day, X^[4] user @baltic_dan posted a screenshot of AOC in the video, writing, "She’s perfect. The arm fat, the little belly, the whiny lib voice. Dios mio, me encanta AOC!!!" garnering over 5,300 likes in two days.

Shortly after, Redditor u/ingofd0p3 made a post to the /r/Facepalm^[5] subreddit sharing Loomer's tweet next to an image of Loomer, writing, "How is gonna talk about AOC when she has had plastic surgery done," garnering over 6,700 upvotes in two days.

On June 9th, X^[6] user and podcast host @alexstein99 reposted the clip of AOC, writing, "Thicker than a McDonald's milkshake," garnering over 6,700 likes in a day. That day, Independent^[7] published an article about the backlash to Loomer's tweet.

Later on June 9th, 2025, Loomer posted on X,^[8] "Why can’t I tell the truth? I don’t really care who is mad. AOC has very clearly gained about 50 pounds since she was first elected to Congress. I have eyes. It’s true and it shows in her arms. I am being honest. Too bad so many of you are too sensitive. Not my problem," garnering over 8,400 likes in a day.

That same day, X^[9] user @TheRoyalSerf posted an AI-generated video captioned, "AOC according to Laura Loomer," that depicts AOC but overweight, garnering over 5,300 likes and 250 reposts in a day.
