Behold How Happy We Look as a Couple In This Photo is an object labeling meme format derived from a scene in the anime series In/Spectre in which Kotoko presents a photograph of her and Kuro standing together, Kotoko smiling and Kuro looking depressed, saying, "Fine! Behold how happy we look as a couple in this photo." The scene appears in the fourth episode of the series, which aired in February 2020 and became the subject of memes later that month in which each character is labeled as a subject that opposes the other.
Origin
On February 1st, 2020, the fourth episode of In/Spectre aired. In one scene, Kotoko holds up a photo of her and Kuro standing together to prove they're dating (shown below).[1][2]
The first known instance of the meme was posted to r/Animemes[3] on February 10th, 2020, garnering over 28,000 upvotes in four years (shown below).
Spread
The meme gained viral spread over the following weeks, with two additional examples uploaded to /r/HistoryMemes[4][5] on February 19th and the 22nd, 2020, garnering over 5,700 and 17,000 upvotes respectively in four years (shown below, left and right).
On December 2nd, 2021, a version of the meme was posted to /r/dndmemes[6] that garnered over 5,500 upvotes in three years. On February 14th, 2024, a version about Elon Musk's frequent criticisms of Stephen King was posted to /r/StephenKing,[7] garnering over 300 upvotes in a day (shown below).
