On March 2nd, 2026, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) of Iran claimed it had launched Kheibar ballistic missiles at Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office.^[1] While Iranian media claimed that the missiles had impacted, Israeli officials did not confirm any damage or casualties.^[12] It was not confirmed if Netanyahu was inside the building during the attack.

Various rumors of Netanyahu being killed began circulating the web that same day, such as a post from X^[13] / Twitter user RadarHits, who noted in a tweet that rumors of a potential assassination were spreading. The tweet received over 2.8 million views, 13,000 likes and 440 replies in two weeks.

On March 13th, the Prime Minister's official X^[2] account, @netanyahu, posted a video from a press conference that they stated happened the day before. The video circulated on the platform, receiving over 13.1 million views and 21,000 likes in four days.

X users in the comments quickly pointed out that Netanyahu purportedly had six fingers in the video, mocking the perceived use of AI with humorous edits depicting Netanyahu with an excessive amount of extra fingers.

Commenting on the original post on March 13th, X^[3] user @peanutnewz posted an edited photo of Netanyahu with seven fingers lit like a menorah, which received over 398,400 views and 8,300 likes in four days.

The same day, X^[4] user @Copelander73 posted a similar comment, this time with an image edited to depict the Prime Minister with an extreme amount of fingers on each hand, which received over 113,500 views and 2,300 likes in four days.

The video was also shared to Reddit on March 13th, 2026, including a post to the /r/conspiracy^[16] subreddit that claimed it was AI and that Netanyahu was dead. The post garnered over 1,700 upvotes and 570 comments in five days, with the top-voted comment from Redditor SphmrSlmp stating:

Just because the video is AI, doesn't mean he's dead. He could just be hiding in a hole somewhere.

On March 14th, 2026, X^[6] user @KimIversenShow quoted the original post with the comment, "Yeah ummm… Bibi is dead guys." The post received over 1.3 million views and 10,000 likes in three days.

As the rumors continued to spread throughout the platform, the official Netanyahu X account (@netanyahu) addressed the conspiracies and comments made about the previous video.

On March 15th, 2026, the @netanyahu X^[7] account posted another video featuring Netanyahu in a coffee shop, joking about the conspiracy theories and comments made about his fingers from the previous video. The post attracted widespread attention, reaching over 74.6 million views and 148,000 likes in just two days.

Ironically, the video meant to disprove rumors of the Prime Minister's passing amplified the sentiment, with X users once again pointing out what they perceived as various inconsistencies and AI tells present in the video, while others argued it was real.

The same day, X^[8] @freezymfe posted a tweet commenting on the coffee cup featured in the video, which many had pointed out seemed artificial due to its lack of spillage. The post received about 826,400 views and 7,100 likes in two days.

Also on March 15th, 2026, X^[9] user @CumhurFrankfurt responded to the original video with an AI-generated video of their own, depicting Netanyahu drinking the blood of children in reference to the adrenochrome-harvesting conspiracy theory. The post received about 644,200 views and 16,000 likes in two days.

X users began posting their own deepfaked versions of the video as it continued garnering attention in the following hours and days.

On March 15th, 2026, X^[10] user @SrPeters responded with a video of the recently deceased Supreme Leader of Iran, Ali Khamenei, dancing with the caption, "Yeah bro, Khamenei’s alive too. Dude was literally filming a TikTok in the neighborhood today." The post received about 4.6 million views and 68,000 likes within two days.

On March 16th, 2026, X^[11] user @jnascim posted a version of the video featuring Netanyahu, Supreme Leader of Iran Mojtaba Khamenei and Supreme Leader of North Korea Kim Jong-un, which received over 4.1 million views and 52,000 likes in just one day.

The conspiracy theory was also widely discussed on Reddit in mid-March 2026, including the coffee video of Netanyahu.

For example, on March 15th, the video was posted to the /r/RealOrAI^[14] subreddit, where the sentiment processed among 50 comments stated the sentiment was 25 percent AI, with the reasoning stating, "A significant portion of commenters believe the video is real, citing the length, complexity, and consistency of details, with some attributing any 'AI look' to filters. However, a notable minority points to specific anomalies like the coffee's behavior, hand glitches, and cuts as evidence of AI generation or deepfaking."

The post garnered over 4,800 upvotes and 2,300 comments in two days before it was locked by moderators.

It was also shared to the /r/isthisAI^[15] subreddit on March 15th, garnering over 1,300 upvotes and 650 comments in two days, with the top answer from Redditor TheSwitchback99 stating:

It’s a pretty long video, the background people seem to stay pretty consistent. I think the best giveaway that it’s real is what seems to be an unblended make up line around his jaw near his ear. (Or maybe that is a filter?).

While the video is very much produced with additional lighting I would actually assume this to be real.

The coffee level wouldn’t change much from a small sip and it may have been a fake sip anyway. Like a “movie sip” where he doesn’t really drink the liquid.

Amid the speculation that Benjamin Netanyahu was dead and the video was AI, Reuters^[17] published an article on March 15th, 2026, stating that it had "verified the video's location from file imagery of the cafe, which matched the interiors seen in ​the video. The date was verified from multiple videos and photos ​of Netanyahu's visit posted by the cafe on Sunday."

The following day, March 16th, Reuters then uploaded a video to its YouTube channel covering the rumors and stated that the video was again not AI. The video received over 56,700 views, 280 likes and 360 comments in a day, with many commenters refuting the reporting and claiming it was still AI.
