Borat Visits Places, also known as King In the Castle, King in the Castle, refers to a series of memes in which satirical character Borat is edited into various video games. In the edits, Borat usually comments on in-game interiors, characters and items.

Origin

On November 3rd, 2006, mockumentary comedy film Borat premiered in the United States.[1] In once scene of the film, the main character Borat enters his hotel room and explores the interiors, seemingly impressed.

On October 30st, 2020, one week after the premier of the sequel film Borat 2, meme creation studio Cowbelly uploaded a Minecraft meme with Borat edited in (shown below), created by content creator yilmaz.exe. The post recevied over 3.8 million views on YouTube[2] and over 120,000 views on Instagram[3] in four months.

Spread

On November 11th, 2020, Neverthink posted a Skyrim version of the meme, with the video gaining over 670,000 views on YouTube[4] and 31,000 views on Instagram[5] in three months (shown below).

In late 2020, edits featuring Borat, particularly those featuring the hotel room scene, solidified into a trend on Instagram and YouTube. For example, on December 20th, 2020, YouTube[6] user Jordy ShortRibs posted a Cyberpunk 2077 meme that received over 440,000 views in two months (shown below, left). On December 30th, 2020, content creator Video Junkiee posted another Cyberpunk 2077 meme that had Borat edited in, gaining over 540,000 views on YouTube[7] and nearly 20,000 views on Instagram[8] in two months (shown below, right).
