Carl Meets Shrek In the Forest is a drawing made by Redditor cm_od in September 2019 of Carl from Jimmy Neutron and Shrek in a master and apprentice scene in which Carl approaches his master Shrek with a samurai sword in hand. The image accumulated object-labeling edits over the next year on Reddit.
Origin
On September 28th, 2019, Redditor cm_od posted their artwork in r/Art[1] with the caption "'We Meet Again…', Me, Digital, 2019" (shown below). The post gained over 6,100 points (97% upvoted) in six months.
Spread
On September 29th, 2019, Redditor Cupcakeformemes posted a labeled version of the image to r/MemeTemplatesOfficial[2] which received over 180 points (100% upvoted) in six months (shown below, left). In March 2020, the image made a comeback in various subreddits. On March 10th, 2020, Redditor TheMLGRogue76 uploaded a variation with Shrek labeled "The kid who found the homework answer sheet online" and Carl labeled "the rest of the class" (shown below, right).
