Cats Watching Cats refers to a series of videos of house cats seated before a screen that is playing the trailer for the 2019 musical film Cats.

Origin

On July 18th, 2019, Twitter[1] user @JKBartleby tweeted, "I showed my cat the Cats trailer." The tweet received more than 5.9 million views, 449,000 likes and 101,000 retweets in four days (shown below).

Spread

The following day, Twitter user @NFroome responded to the tweet with a video of their own. The post received more than 200,000 views, 17,000 likes and 2,200 retweets in three days (shown below).



On July 20th, Twitter user @QueenLesli, responding to a tweet[2] by Broadway actress Patti Murin, tweeted a video of their dog watching the trailer. Within two days, the tweet received more than 37,000 views, 2,700 likes and 200 retweets (shown below).

Several media outlets covered the meme as well as other instances of cats watching the trailer, including Slate,[3] The Daily Dot, [4] TeenVogue[5] and more.
