About

Cheese Slap, also known as Cheesing and the Cheese Challenge (not to be mistaken with the Fried Cheese and Ham Slap), is a series of prank videos in which participants take a slice of cheese and slap a person or animal in the face with it.

Origin

On June 9th, 2006, YouTuber arsone62 posted a video entitled "The Cheese Incident" in which a series of people have a slice of cheese thrown at them.



Spread

On September 23rd, 2006, YouTuber blue2relick published a video of the cheese slap prank being performed (shown below).



On January 15th, 2008, YouTuber madcowowow uploaded another cheese slap prank video (shown below, left). On December 27th, 2018, YouTuber Cool TikToks uploaded the first Cheese Slap Tik Tok compilation video (shown below, right).



The TikTok parody videos mostly featured the disco song "YMCA" by The Village People. On November 13th, 1978, The Village People[2] released "YMCA" as the only single from their third studio album Cruisin' (shown below).



Mirror Variation

In November 2018, many TikTok users participated in tossing cheese at a mirror to the "YMCA" song.



Pet Variation

On November, 10th 2018, Twitter user blargmyschnoople[1] introduced the "Dog Cheese" game in which you try to land a slice of cheese on a dog. The tweet gained 126,161 Likes and 27,653 Retweets (shown below).




In December 2018, TikTok users began to incorporate the dog cheese game into the cheese slap.



Exploitables

TikTok users began labeling their food items. On December 20th, 2018 @heathhil's TikTok video was uploaded to YouTube (shown below). It featured a tortilla labeled "My love and affection" meaning that by slapping a person with that tortilla they are giving the person their love and affection.



2019 Twitter Resurgence

On February 28th, 2019, Twitter user @unclehxlmes tweeted a video of person tossing a slice of cheese on a child. The tweet gathered more than 10.3 million views, 750,000 likes and 250,000 retweets prior to being removed (shown below).

That day, Twitter user @TEJAX001 posted a video of himself tossing a slice of cheese on to his cousin's face (shown below). Within one week, the video accumulated upwards of 520,000 views, 18,000 likes and 2,400 retweets.




Also on February 28th, Twitter user @annaclairerusso uploaded a similar video, which received over of 12.7 million views, 830,000 likes and 300,800 retweets over the next week (shown below).

On March 1st, @unclehxlmes[3] posted a tweet explaining why he deleted the video, claiming "it genuinely got way out of hand."




On March 3rd, Twitter user @nasiijau posted an animated parody of the practice in which a Scorbunny Pokemon has a slice tossed on its face (shown below).
