Christian Girl Autumn is an expression created as a Christian-themed variation of "Hot Girl Summer," which is often associated with stereotypical basic women who enjoy pumpkin spice lattes and posting photos of themselves in oversized scarfs in Autumn scenes. In early August 2019, Twitter users began mocking a picture of influencer Caitlin Covington along with the hashtag #christiangirlautumn.
Origin
On August 9th, 2019, Twitter user @lasagnabby[1] tweeted a picture of Covington[6] and her friend Emily Gemma with the caption, " Hot Girl Summer is coming to an end, get ready for Christian Girl Autumn 🍂😍" (shown below). The tweet gained over 50,700 likes and 12,900 retweets in five days.
Spread
On August 11th, 2019, @spoopyman123[2] tweeted a reply to the original photo saying, "This picture just asked for my regional managers phone number and customer services number" (shown below, left). The tweet garnered over 7,700 likes in four days. The next day, @EvaRoethler[3] also replied saying, "This picture thinks Africa is a country and is going on a mission trip there in 2020" which accumulated over 150 likes in two days (shown below, right).
On August 12th, Caitlin Covington[7] responded by tweeting more Fall photos of herself captioned, "If all of Twitter is gonna make fun of my fall photos, at least pick some good ones! 🤣 Super proud of these. For the record, I do like pumpkin spice lattes. Cheers! ☕️" (shown below). The tweet gained over 80,400 likes and 4,700 retweets in two days.
That same day, Twitter users continued to mock the original photo with posts of their own. Twitter user @jcksonstephens[4] posted a fake Snapchat photo for #ChristianGirlAutumn (shown below, left). Twitter user @ChelseaGilson[5] posted a photo of herself in fitness attire holding a pumpkin caption, "Whoever made #ChristianGirlAutumn trend, I love you. Thanks for giving me an opportunity to share this embarrassingly basic photo of myself" (shown below, right).
Christian Girl Autumn 2022
In Autumn 2022, memes and discussions about Christian Girl Autumn increased after Caitlin Covington announced she'd be taking her annual Christian Girl Autumn photos. She made the announcement on October 6th, 2022 on Instagram[8] in a post showing all of her past fall photo shoots, writing, "My fall pictures through the years 🍁🍂 in the first one I was pregnant with Kenny! We are leaving on our annual Vermont trip next week & I cannot wait!!! Bring on allllll the fall 😉," garnering over 51,900 likes in four days. On the same day, Twitter[9] user @PopCrave made a post sharing the news that Covington would be taking her photos soon, garnering over 112,000 likes, 10,000 retweets and 6,000 quote-retweets in the same span of time (shown below). On October 7th, Instagram[10] user Taylorlorenz3.0 reposted the image, garnering over 1,900 likes in three days.
