About
Cody Parkey's Missed Field Goal refers to jokes made about Chicago Bears kicker Cody Parkey's failed game-winning field goal attempt in the Chicago Bears 2019 playoff game against the Philadelphia Eagles.
Origin
On January 6th, 2019, the Philadelphia Eagles beat the Chicago Bears in one the NFC Wild Card playoff games 16-15. At the end of the game, the Bears had an opportunity to win the game with a field goal by kicker Cody Parkey. The kick missed, hitting both the upright and crossbar of the goalposts (shown below). Of note, Parkey had missed several key field goals throughout the year by hitting the uprights. Also of note, he had hit a successful kick before the miss, but that kick didn't count because the Eagles had called timeout before the snap.
Spread
After the game, viewers took to making fun of Parkey for his miss. Twitter user @DylansRawTake photoshopped an image of Sandra Bullock in Bird Box onto Parkey's head, gaining over 2,400 retweets and 4,900 likes (shown below, left). Twitter user @NBCSBears tweeted a screenshot of Parkey's Wikipedia page, which changed his profession to "Professional Upright Hitter," gaining over 400 retweets and 1,100 likes (shown below, right).
On YouTube, user MrLegend set the missed kick to My Heart Will Go On by Celine Dion, gaining over 3,000 views (shown below, left). User Meem Memes gained over 2,200 views with a compilation (shown below, right).
Later, it was revealed that the kick was actually deflected by Eagles player Treyvon Hester.[1]
