The joke became popularized around 2019 through image macros, text posts and merchandise. In 2023, a TikToker uploaded a video sharing the joke, which was responded to sarcastically by another TikToker, inspiring absurdist, scary and glitchy edits of the video.

In mid-2025, the video became a central exploitable element in the Adrian Eeffoc Brainrot genre of brainrot and lobotomy videos, which combined exploitable video elements into absurd edits, largely focusing on Eeffoc and the Adrian, Explain Our Friend Group meme. Other common exploitables in the trend included A Barbershop Haircut That Costs a Quarter, Bro's Got X-Ray Vision for Grippers, Instagrammar, Steven Here and Thompson's Cutz and Design's, among many others.

While it is unclear who first used the "coffee spelled backwards is eeffoc" joke, the earliest known use of the joke is a July 6th, 2017 post by X^[1] user @CoffeeEndless, writing, "Coffee spelled backwards is eeffoc. As in, I don't give eeffoc about any of you until I've had my coffee." The joke became popularized over the following years through image macros. For example, on February 10th, 2019, Facebook^[2] page Sarcastic Mama posted it, garnering over 3,400 shares and 1,300 reactions in four years (shown below). On September 23rd, 2022, Instagram^[3] user sarcasm_only posted it, gaining over 200,000 likes in a year. The joke has appeared on numerous pieces of merchandise throughout the late 2010s.

Markbillett14 and Matthewkingfamous 'Coffee Spelled Backwards' Edits

On January 3rd, 2023, Tiktoker^[4] @markbillett14 posted a video where he tells the and then takes a sip of some coffee, garnering over 2.1 million views in seven months (shown below, left). On March 24th, TikToker^[5] @matthewkingfamous posted a stitch to the video, sarcastically adding, "It's eeffoc. It's funny," garnering over 858,000 views in five months (shown below, right).

On May 17th, TikToker^[6] @natspone posted an absurd edit of @matthewkingfamous' response video, garnering over 1.4 million views in three months (shown below). Natspone's video inspired other TikTokers to edit the response in similarly absurd and glitchy ways, with Natspone also posting more edits of the response.

On July 27th, TikToker^[7] @the__throngler posted an edit of the video, garnering over 1.9 million views in a month (shown below, left). On July 30th, TikToker^[8] @natspone posted a version of the video that gained over 2.8 million views in two weeks (shown below, right).
