Comrade Doggo refers to a viral photograph of a dog wearing a Russian hat framed in front of a red communist flag.

Origin

On October 24th, 2014, Tumblr ^[1] user moonshineanimations reposted a photograph of a dog wearing a Russian hat positioned in front of a red communist flag, which was originally blogged by user Deculture^[6] (since deleted). They captioned the image "much vodka, very comunism." The post (shown below) received more than 31,900 notes in three years. It is the earliest available version of the image.

Spread

Several months later, on January 6th, 2015, Redditor ^[3] Man's Best Comrade posted the picture in the /r/pics subreddit. The post received more than 8,500 points (88% upvoted) and 180 comments.

The following year, on February 16th, 2016, the Comrade Doggo Facebook ^[4] page launched. In nearly two years, the group has amassed more than 800 likes and followers.

On August 3rd, 2017, Tumblr^[2] user fuliajuli posted the image in a variation of the Russian Cat Translation meme. The post (shown below, left) received more than 8,500 notes in one month.

The following month, on September 10th, Redditor^[5] GammaBit_exe posted the picture in the /r/DankMemes subreddit. They captioned the post "When your mom gives your sibling a cookie so you pull out the communist manifesto." The post (shown below, right) received more than 19,000 points (89% upvoted) and 230 comments in 24 hours.
