Coughing Cat refers to a photoshopped image of a cat that went viral in late 2018 after it was compared to the face little kids make when they cough. The meme has since been used as an exploitable image macro and a reaction image around the web.

Origin

On November 27th, 2018, the Instagram account Idascreatures, a profile that posts photoshopped pictures of animals, posted a picture of an open-mouthed, wide-eyed cat^[1] (shown below).

Spread

On December 3rd, 2018, Twitter user @aliahgeyes tweeted the image with the caption "This is how little kids cough," gaining over 200,000 retweets and 630,000 likes (shown below).

Twitter user @julissapizzaaaa responded to the tweet by showing her little brother coughing, proving the point and gaining over 750 retweets and 6,400 likes (shown below).

Other Twitter users responded to the tweet by validating the comparison in various ways. User @blackbile tweeted several pictures of kids coughing, gaining over 140 retweets and 1,500 likes (shown below, left). User @ericisgrody combined the two pictures on phones, gaining over 570 retweets and 4,400 likes (shown below, right),
