About

Crop and Story Time are two comments often found on TikTok videos. "Crop" is commented to request that the uploader reupload the image shown in the video without any additional elements so they can screenshot it properly. "Story Time" is commented to request that the TikToker give the backstory behind the content in another upload. In March 2022, as spam copypastas including the recipe for brownies and chupagetti became popularized on the platform, TikTokers began spamming these comments in videos to parody users who tend ask for storytimes and crops and to contribute to the spam comment trends.

Origin

It is unknown who first commented "crop" and "story time." The comments are used by TikTokers to request things from the uploader. "Crop" is used to request that the uploader reupload the image or meme shown in the video without any additional text or elements so they can screenshot it. "Story time" is used to request a follow-up storytime video where the TikToker gives the full context or story behind the content shown. These comments appeared on TikTok videos throughout 2021.

Spread

Spam Comments / Copypasta

In early 2022, TikTokers began spamming specific copypastas with increased frequency on random uploads. Some of the most prevalent include "Nerf Miner," "Anyway, Here's the Recipe for Brownies" and "Lava Hound When It Dies Guards." In March 2022, the same month as the brownie recipe and chupagetti spam, TikTokers began spamming "crop" and "story time" in videos that don't need cropped or story times as a parody of people who tend to make these comments and to continue the spam commenting trend. TikTokers began calling these comments out in late March. For example, on March 31st, TikTokers[1][2] @tflores_ and @jay.brxxke posted videos criticizing the spammers, gaining over 23,000 and 29,000 views in under 24 hours respectively (shown below).

On the same day, rapper Logic posted a video to TikTok[3] consisting of him repeating the comments, referencing the spam, gaining over 29,000 views in under 10 hours (shown below). On the same day, PopBuzz[4] and Dexerto[5] published articles explaining the spam.
