Cursed Cat, also known as Angry as Fuk and ъуъ съука, refers to an image of a black cat crossing a road, photoshopped in a cursed manner. After gaining spread as a part of "ъеъ" trend among Russian users, in March 2019 the edited photograph gained popularity as an image macro on Reddit.

Origin

On November 12th, 2008, Getty Images uploaded a series of photographs made by photographer Christopher Furlong at a scene of a fatal shooting in Derby, United Kingdom.^[1] One of the photographs depicted a black cat crossing the road next to two police officers.

In the following years, a cropped version of the image saw heavy use online, appearing in several news articles^[2] and blog posts.^[3]

In November 2018, an unknown user posted a photoshopped version of the image. In the edit, the cat appeared as a bipedal creature in a comically angry stance. The earliest found version of the image was shared by Twitter user @pinchenic on November 28th, 2018.^[4] On December 1st, the edited image was posted in Facebook community Cursed Images, where it gained over 420 likes.^[5]

Spread

Starting in January 2019, the image, paired with the caption "ъуъ съука"^[6] gained popularity among Russian users as a reaction image as a part of "ъеъ" trend.^[7] Examples of memes utilizing the captioned meme appeared in several notable VK communities and on Twitter (shown below).

On Reddit, a cropped version of "ъуъ съука" macro, recaptioned "angry as fuk", received spread in March 2019. On March 13th, 2019, Redditor Norixon posted the recaptioned image to /r/dank_meme subreddit,^[8] where it gained over 27,800 upvotes in two days (shown below).

In the following days, multiple versions of the macro were posted in /r/dankmemes^[9] and other subreddits.
