About

Derploma Guy, also known as Mischievous Mike, is an advice animal image macro series featuring a photograph of a student wearing a mischievous grin at his high school graduation ceremony. The captions typically confess to committing mild indiscretions and telling white lies, in a similar vein to I Too Like to Live Dangerously image macros.

Origin

On June 5th, 2015, Imgur[1] user DerplomaGuy submitted a photograph of himself wearing a furled upper lip facial expression while holding a diploma at his graduation ceremony (shown below). Within five days, the image received more than one million views, 19,000 points and 600 comments.



Spread

On June 6th, Imgur[2] user okayyoucanlaughandjokearound posted an edited Javert reaction GIF with the Derploma Guy superimposed over police inspector Javert peering through a window (shown below, left). The same day, the official Imgur[3] blog published a post about the image macro series titled "DerplomaGuy Takes Over Imgur." Also on June 6th, Imgur[6] user pintozoz submitted a Derploma Guy image macro mocking a poorly designed update to Imgur's Android mobile operating system application (shown below, right). Within four days, the images gained over 910,000 and 540,000 views respectively. In the coming days, the news sites Metro[9], The Huffington Post[10], Elite Daily[11], Loop[12] and The Chive[13] published compilation articles highlighting the advice animal character.
