Despite Everything, It's Still You is a line from the 2015 indie role-playing video game Undertale that appears when the player interacts with a mirror near the end of the game. A memorable scene and catchphrase from Undertale, it has inspired numerous memes and fan art, while the line has been quoted in various contexts over the years.

Origin

On September 15th, 2015, the indie role-playing video game Undertale was released. At the start of the game, the main character Frisk can look at themselves in the mirror, with the game commenting, "It's you!" Near the end of the game, if the player chooses "Neutral Route," at the location Asgore's Home, the player can inspect a mirror there, with the dialogue changing to "Despite everything, it's still you" (video shown below).^[1]

Spread

The earliest known fan art based on the scene, a RWBY crossover, was posted by Tumblr^[2] user lel-scissors on February 23rd, 2016. The post (shown below, left) received over 3,300 likes and reblogs in seven years. On December 9th, Twitter^[3] user @Chromorbid posted two images of Frisk looking at the mirror at the start and end of Undertale, captioning them, "beginning of 2016 vs the end of 2016." The post (shown below, right) received over 16,900 retweets and 22,900 likes in seven years.

In the following years, more fan labor dedicated to the image was posted and shared online, primarily on Tumblr. For example, on May 17th, 2019, Tumblr^[4] user anxietystitches posted a cross-stitched artwork of the scene that gained over 13,000 reblogs and 19,300 likes in four years (shown below, left). On December 31st, 2021, Twitter^[5] user @dekubrush posted a meme referencing the events of 2020 and 2021, mainly the COVID-19 pandemic, which garnered over 53,700 retweets and 231,500 likes in two years (shown below, right).
