About

Dog Cringe Reactions, also known as TikTok Cringe Dog Videos, refers to a number of low-res videos of dogs doing funny things that are used as reactions to cringeworthy content, mostly on TikTok. The main three videos are Daredevil Dog, used to mock vigilante-like statements, a video of a dog with chattering teeth, used in a similar way to show mock fear, and a video of a dog showing its teeth and laughing hysterically. The trend was popularized on TikTok around August 2021.

Origin

Daredevil Dog

Daredevil Dog refers to a video of a dog, named Bodhi,[2] sitting and wearing a Daredevil mask as the camera pans around him. The video was first uploaded to Instagram and YouTube in 2016 and is often paired with Evanescense's 2003 song "Bring Me To Life," which is featured in the Daredevil film released the same year. Bodhi died in 2016 shortly after the video began going viral. The earliest available upload of the Daredevil Dog video was uploaded to YouTube on July 26th, 2016. It shows Bodhi sitting very still on a couch with a serious face and a Daredevil mask on (shown below).

On December 9th, 2020, YouTuber Rodrick posted a version of the video adding the song "Bring Me To Life" by Evanescence overtop, a song notably featured in the 2003 Daredevil movie (shown below).

Dog Shivering / Teeth Chattering

A video of a Dog Shivering is often used as a reaction to cringey wannabe-vigilante content similarly to Daredevil Dog. On June 18th, 2018, Instagram[1] user thesaltyhound posted a video of their dog Salty's teeth chattering, a common occurrence for the dog, gaining over 172,000 views in two years (shown below). The video gained significant prominence online. On June 30th, it was then shared on Facebook[3] by UNILAD, gaining over 82,000 reactions and 23,000 shares in two years.

On July 14th, 2021, YouTuber mason uploaded a version of the video adding a chattering teeth sound effect to the dog, gaining over 292,000 views in four months (shown below). It's unclear if this was created by the uploader.

Dog Laughing / Cackling

The origin of the laughing dog reaction video is currently unknown. The earliest known upload was posted to YouTube on September 27th, 2021, and features laughter from Michael Jackson's "Thriller" added. On October 13th, YouTuber qRT CrFD posted a version of the video featuring a more hysterical laugh-track and lower resolution, gaining over 28,100 views in a month. This is not the original upload and appears to be from TikTok (shown below).

Spread

The Dog Shivering appears to be the earliest of the dog videos used to react to cringe on TikTok, used to represent fake shivering as if scared. On August 13th, 2021, TikToker[4] @.shut.yo.ass.up posted a video of the dog shivering captioned "shiver me timbers," gaining over 100,000 views in three months. On August 23rd, TikToker @ghostfacecult0700 attached the video to the end of a lip dub of someone rapping aggressive lyrics, gaining over 502,000 views in three months (shown below).

The Daredevil Dog reaction became notably popularized throughout October 2021 around the same time the shivering dog started to reach a peak in usage. On October 18th, TikToker @daredevilldog posted a Duet using the dog to react to a cringe video of a woman saying she can stop a toddler from crying by threateningly staring them in the eyes, gaining over 9.6 million views in a month (shown below).

The Laughing Dog is used in a more broad way to laugh about cringe content, as well as cheesy jokes in general, and started to become widespread around the end of October 2021. On October 19th, TikToker @rxnd0m_cconteent attached it to the end of a video of TikToker @pamv123 telling the joke "what do you call guys who love math? Algebros," gaining over 54,000 views in a month (shown below).
