About
"Dress Go Spinny", also referred to as "Skirt Go Spinny", is a popular catchphrase used in the LGBTQIA+ community. The phrase is used as a tongue-in-cheek way to deflect criticism or inquiries as to why a trans woman transitioned, similar to how Money Printer Go Brr is used in the Wojak template.
Origin
The catchphrase is thought to have originated on Twitter. On July 18th, 2019, Mia Mulder (@Potatopolitics) posted a tweet reading:[1]
Trans women transition for one single,
depraved sexual reason:
Dress go spinny
The tweet was later reposted on Reddit the same day.[2]
Spread
The phrase sparked discussion and memes featuring the phrase on Reddit and Twitter. On March 25th, 2020, Redditor Student_Arthur posted a "Money Printer Go Brr" variation with the phrase on /r/politicalcompassmemes,[3] gaining over 1,800 points (shown below, left). On October 12th, 2019, Redditor BladePactWarlock posted a What Gives People Feelings Of Power variation in /r/traaaaaaaaans,[4] gaining over 2,400 points (shown below, right).
