Eddie Munson Fans are fans of the Stranger Things character Eddie Munson, who appears in season four of the series. Eddie Munson became a fan-favorite character after the release of the season in 2022. In August 2022, some people, particularly on TikTok, began calling fans of the character cringe, especially fans who cosplay as him and act like he does in the show.
Origin
On May 27th, 2022, Stranger Things season four was added to Netflix. The season introduces a new character, Eddie Munson, a rebellious metalhead and founder of the Dungeons & Dragons club "Hellfire Club." The character became a fan-favorite in the days following the season's premiere.
Spread
The Eddie Munson fandom became notably present on TikTok throughout the year, where users uploaded videos cosplaying him and acting like him. For example, on June 10th, TikToker[1] @_cinnabuni_ posted a video lip dubbing to a Munson quote while dressed like him, garnering over 3.2 million views in three months (shown below, left). On July 8th, TikToker[2] @vampireknlght posted a video lip dubbing to the same part, garnering over 650,000 views in two months (shown below, right). The fandom is also notably present on Twitter,[8][9] where users frequently post fan art depicting the character.

Naomie Lapointe's Eddie Munson Meetup Video / Eddie Munson Fans Are Cringe
On August 8th, 2022, TikToker[3] @yoyo.cosplay, name Naomie Lapointe, posted several videos of herself at an "Eddie Munson meetup" at a convention where she, too, was dressed as Eddie Munson, some of which have been deleted (example shown below, left). On that day, TikToker[4] @iluvestfxv reposted one of the videos with a cringe reaction, garnering over 1.2 million views in the same span of time (shown below, right). The next day @yoyo.cosplay[5] stitched the video to defend herself, saying she doesn't get why people are surprised.

TikTokers continued to re-upload videos of Lapointe at the convention with additional elements calling them cringe. On August 13th, TikToker[6] @chrisxstrangerthingsx posted a video of the crowd of Munson cosplayers dancing to a version of Chrissy, Wake Up garnering over 2.2 million views in a month (shown below).

The hate for Munson fans continued to grow over the course of the month. On August 23rd, TikToker[7] @tvdelrey posted a video calling out several cosplayers on TikTok for being cringe, garnering over 3.8 million views in a week (shown below). On August 30th, Rolling Stone[10] published an article about the Stranger Things fandom turning on Munson, highlighting the situation with Lapointe in the piece and interviewing her.
