Eggdog is a computer-generated egg-shaped dog. The character has been used in a variety of remix videos, image macros and fan artworks.

Origin

On January 29th, 2019, Instagram user @groomer_andrea posted a video of herself grooming a Pomeranian dog named PomPom. The post received more than 97,000 views and 13,000 likes in less than two months (shown below).

That day, Redditor [1] owenorange posted a screenshot from the grooming video and titled the image "Egg Dog" (shown below).

Spread

On February 13th, 2019, Twitter [2] user meetissai tweeted the image of PomPom being groomed and a 3-D rendering of the dog. The post received more than 44,000 retweets and 133,000 likes in one month (shown below).

The following day, Twitter user @ADARUTOU posted a video render of the character in the VRChat game 52chat (shown below). The render for 52chat was later poosted on DeviantArt [6] on February 19th.


About two weeks later, Steam Community [3] user Derpy Hooves posted another rendering of the dog, which could be used in a variety of video games on Steam (shown below, right). They wrote of the dog "An egg that is a dog."

On February 28th, Twitter user @zotakufilms posted a video using the Derpy Hooves rendering. They captioned the video "meet eggdog." The post received more than 21,000 retweets, 51,000 retweets and 600,000 likes in less than one month (shown below).


Over the next few weeks, @zotakufilms continued to post Eggdog video. On March 2nd, they posted a video entitled "eggdog's apartment." The post received more than 16,000 retweets, 40,000 likes and 940,000 views in less than a month (shown below)


On March 5th, Redditor Kk123789 posted the @meetissai image on the /r/gaming subreddit.[5] The post received more than 59,000 points (88% upvoted) and 500 comments.

On March 16th, Twitter[4] user @Val_Arkandes tweeted that they had created a "A very short game I made with the help of @goosyberry featuring…. EGGDOG!!!" The game was made available on Google Drive (trailer below).
